"However, having arrived from the Championship where he served with Burton in June 2018, he ranks among the Blues’ top earners. With his three-year deal now up, Pompey are in no position to match those payment figures, let alone initiate an increase."

The salary guess website has the following players listed as Portsmouth's top earners and Tom Naylor is 19th on the list!

John Marquis £5,100
Michael Jacobs £4,900
Ellis Harrison £4,300
Ronan Curtis £3,700
Sean Raggett £3,600

I can understand Tom Naylor wanting to move back up North in these Covid times like I can understand Ollie Clarke possibly wanting to move back down to the South West if his family are there. It can't be much fun living away from your home and family.

Hopefully Ollie is happy at the Stags and wants to stay. I was a bit worried by the fact that his season seemed to fizzle out a little bit towards the end but NC seems to like him.

Tom Naylor in and Ollie Clarke out, would be excellent business for Stags

Is there even any need for this thread when we've got the other transfer one?

Not sure why you want Ollie Clarke out. Our midfield has so much more energy when he plays.

Heard from a good source that he’s on 5k a week and wants a move closer to home. He doubts whether we can afford him. He also said that Burton never offered him a new contract when he left before joining Portsmouth.

We don’t need him, we don’t need to disrupt the squad and pay a defensive midfielder that much.

Did he play under NC for Derby and Burton ?

Him and Parkes at CB would be the best CB pairing in League 2 to go with our league best midfield...

Just 2 prolific strikers needed then and we'll smash the league....
These are my opinions , if you don't like them I have others...

Why would you not want a player of that pedigree?
Clearly Nigel sees merit in pursuing Naylor, I thought we were supposed to be trusting NC?

I think what out of contract players want and what they get may be very different things

This could be an Ian Greaves / George Foster moment. :D

Dont think its the case of not wanting him.... We could probably get 3 decent players for the cost of his wages.. Big nige wont wanna smash the budget for naylor imo.

Not when he has clearly said we don’t need anyone else in midfield either.

Cambridge United
Under Contract: Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Jack Iredale, Tom Dickens, Lewis Simper, Joe Ironside, Harvey Knibbs
In Negotiations: Dimitar Mitov, Kyle Knoyle, Greg Taylor, Harrison Dunk, Luke Hannant, Paul Digby, Liam O’Neil, Paul Mullin, Andy Dallas, Ben Worman, Wes Hoolahan
Contract Option Triggered: Adam May

Released: Callum Burton, Joe Neal

Paul Mullin, Wes Hoolahan, Kyle Knoyle and Luke Hannant will receive plenty of offers although I think Hoolahan is just happy playing for Cambridge at this point in his career. He might be thinking whether he can last another season.

Congratulations to Greg Taylor on his third promotion, one from League 2 and two from the National League.

Well done to Paul Digby as well who has proved a few people including former managers wrong.

Is that six former Stags promoted from League 2 this season? - Matty Blair, Chris Clements, Greg Taylor, Paul Digby, Alex Baptiste and Dappy Afalayan.

He'll be a classy centre half, leader and captain just like Robbo in the Dearden team.

Parkes isn’t better than Perch or Rawson imo. I’d be very underwhelmed if we signed him.

Broomo said on twitter :

Just seen on tbe forum lifestags say Naylor wasn't offered a new deal at Burton.

Not true. He was offered a deal that would have seen him as top earner but turned it down to join Pompey with interest from Sunderland as well.

He also doesn’t think Naylor would drop to this level.

In terms of the budget, Cloughy was quite keen to stress he was after value for money.

If he was able to get Naylor for what he considers a L1 wage, and he performed as he has like a L1 player, then I suppose he would consider it value for money.

Contradicting stories then, my info was from a friend of TN

He also said naylor and Clough didn’t always get on, he used to drop him even when playing well etc.

Could be false obviously, just passing on what I was told.

Who says he'd play in midfield ?

It’s the position he’s been doing very well in league 1. Also 5k a week for a centre half? Can’t see it myself.

Cambridge fans not happy Callum Burton has been released, could be a decent keeper option.

I hope that some aren't forgetting that we have taken over 6K a week out of the budget for Cook and Maynard, I for one would gladly pay a good amount of that to strengthen the backline ..BUT then again it's not my money that will be spent... In Nigel I trust more than any manager in recent years ...

That could be anything from £500 a week at Burton to £20,000 a week at Sunderland.
