There is no way that Tom Naylor will drop down from being Portsmouth captain at top end of League 1 to League 2.

Ability wise I completely agree. If it wasn’t for the obvious links then this would seem unrealistic.

Surely that means a midfielder would be leaving if it were true about Naylor (i doubt he'd come here to be honest).

I have a feeling Clarke would be the one to leave if so, based on nothing but a hunch.

I think the Naylor link may have legs.

Certainly adds further justification for a possible move.

Get bappa in, and bucko in the backroom staff too, and all of a sudden we've got the band back together!

Seriously, Naylor would be brilliant. I remember thinking he was a cut above when I saw him playing for Paul Cox as a young man.
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.

According to that salary sport website he's on £1,600 a week. I'd be very happy to sign him on that wage!

Maybe he wants to move closer to home. He's worked with the gaffer before. You never know in 2 season we could be in the championship too. Note: I said COULD ;)

It appears he is on Championship money and doesn’t want to accept less. That would be a massive cost for a league 2 club even if he takes a small cut to be near home.

I think this is 2+2 = 5. There’s bound to be speculation as to which club he would go to and the Mansfield/Clough history, together with our spending reputation, would add us to the list. I can’t see Nigel disrupting his wage structure to accommodate one player whoever it may be.

Portsmouth have offered him less wages than he earned this season to resign for them, it's still on the table.
If the 1600 is correct I'm sure we can afford him.
Anyone know where is partners from? Just says up north and anywhere is up north from Pompey.

Tom Naylor will be on a lot more than £1,600 per week. Portsmouth are big payers and he is the captain of the team.

The football manager database has him on £2200.

Don’t forget they signed him from Burton, where he would’ve been on small wages, so it wouldn’t have taken much to give him a pay rise.

He's on nothing at the moment, Portsmouth said players can't expect the same monies after last seasons covid crisis with no fans allowed in.
Derby could probably afford him, not sure about Burton.

Looks like there is more to it though, his young family remained in the North. At first glance you might be right, but I suspect we could afford him and he wants to live up here, you never know.

I suspect if others haven't realised by now, the salary sport site is guff

The following extract from the article confirms he is on a lot more than £1,600 per week.

"However, having arrived from the Championship where he served with Burton in June 2018, he ranks among the Blues’ top earners. With his three-year deal now up, Pompey are in no position to match those payment figures, let alone initiate an increase."

The salary guess website has the following players listed as Portsmouth's top earners and Tom Naylor is 19th on the list!

John Marquis £5,100
Michael Jacobs £4,900
Ellis Harrison £4,300
Ronan Curtis £3,700
Sean Raggett £3,600

I can understand Tom Naylor wanting to move back up North in these Covid times like I can understand Ollie Clarke possibly wanting to move back down to the South West if his family are there. It can't be much fun living away from your home and family.

Hopefully Ollie is happy at the Stags and wants to stay. I was a bit worried by the fact that his season seemed to fizzle out a little bit towards the end but NC seems to like him.

If we are paying him Tyler Walker wages then no go. Sounds to me like he wants to stay and using the whole ''go back up north thing'' to get a better deal.

Ex-Stags defender set for return for 3rd spell with Clough?

Postby Chadman » Mon May 17, 2021 3:43 pm

This could be interesting. Sounds very feasable.
