Scunthorpe home preview

Postby Sweden Stag » Sun Apr 18, 2021 7:28 pm

After winning 1-0 away at Stevenage last Saturday, a three-pointer which all but secured our EFL status, the Stags now play their final Tuesday night fixture this season. And the opponents are Scunthorpe, who have conceded seven goals in their last two away games at Morecambe and Forest Green respectively.

Yet our run of five straight victories earlier this season started when we gor the first time since our EFL comeback fixture in August 2013 travelled to Scunthorpe for an EFL fixture on Boxing Day 2020, as the one of last season, which had been our final away one, belonged to the ones which never were played. But not for the first time, a run of five Stags league victories had started against Scunthorpe. Incredibly enough, a similar run started at home to the Iron on December 23, 1967, when the Stags won to a convincing 3-0 scoreline. Other sides slain then were Colchester (twice), Barrow away and Oxford at home during the 1967-68 Third Division campaign.

The current Scunthorpe season has been some kind of disjointed due to the fact that the Iron had a couple of games postponed prior to the Paint Trophy clash in November. Then, the Iron were inside the bottom two have since then recorded the odd victory here, the odd one there but have won just once in their last eleven games, albeit with six draws.

The Iron relegation in 2018-19 must have been disappointing inasmuch as Scunthorpe had in the three previous campaign flirted with the playoffs to the Championship, finishing seventh in 2016, third in 2017 and fifth last season. Mainly due to not conceding much at Glanford Park in those three campaigns.

Yet, a close look into the season-by-season Stags line-ups in the centenary book reveal that Scunthorpe & Lindsey United (as the Iron were called then) were the last side to face the Stags in a non-league fixture before being elected to the FL way back in 1931.

This event happened at Scunthorpe’s previous ground, Old Show Ground, on May 2, 1931, when two goals by William Frith saw the Stags' final non-league victory (before the election) to the tune of 2-1. The Stags line-up then was: Chambers H, White, Poyser, Hargreaves, Chambers B, Cooke E, Goddard, Frith, Grice B, Trotman, Murphy.

The Iron enjoyed their best league moments in the early 60’s when they played in the old 2nd division, finishing 4th in 1961-62, only five points (under the two-point ruling) less than Leyton Orient in runners-up position. Many of the Iron’s goals came from Barrie Thomas, one of several players that have figured for both sides. Thomas, who was a Stag during the whole of 1957-58 and 1958-59 scoring 48 goals in 72 appearances, was transferred to the Iron early on in 1959-60 and went on to net 92 times in the sixties, a long-standing club record which was beaten by Steve Cammack in the mid-eighties.

And the Iron's best league moments in recent years were achieved since we melted the Iron in a home fixture to a scoreline of 1-0 on January 3, 2005. On the final day of the 2004-05 season, Scunthorpe were promoted to League One after drawing at Shrewsbury. Thence, Scunthorpe even played three seasons in the Championship (2007-08, 2009-10, 2010-11) and in October 2009 beat Newcastle at home 2-1!

And when Scunthorpe were relegated from League One in 2012-13, they also had quite a poor home record, 38 goals shipped at headquarters. Yet, Scunthorpe achieved very much on limited resources by reaching the Championship at all, and even staying up in 2010. Mainly thanks to goals galore from Gary Hooper, a few years ago playing in the PL for Norwich, and not the only ex-topflight player who has played for Scunthorpe (see below).

Some of the players which represented Scunthorpe at Championship level have since then represented the Stags. Kevan Hurst from the 2007-08 side of the Iron is one. Two others from the side which stayed up two seasons later are Michael Raynes and David Mirfin. Latter, who later tried his luck at York City, was in the Scunthorpe side which beat Newcastle, as noted above, yet faced the Stags in their FL comeback fixture at Scunthorpe seven years ago along with Terry Hawkridge and Stephen Dawson.

When we made our FL return at Scunthorpe, they were bossed by Brian Laws. But his third Iron spell ended with the sack following an FA Cup home exit at the hands of fellow Lincolnshire rivals Grimsby on November 19, 2013. Laws was succeeded by Russ Wilcox, who lasted about a year and also bossed for a while last season. Current Scunthorpe manager is Neil Cox, appointed in August.

Even in the non-league days of both clubs in the Midland Counties League, there were goals galore in the in total 20 non-league outings. None of them were goalless and the Stags scored at least once in all but one, an away game on September 26, 1925.

This tradition continued when Scunthorpe were elected to the League twenty years after the Stags. None of the previous 32 league outings at One Call Stadium aka Field Mill have finished goalless compared to the very first and the two latest prior to the September 2004 fixture at Scunthorpe. And only on four occasions have the Stags been goalless in home games against the Iron.

Some away games ensured the first Stags away win that season, worth mentioning are 1-0 on August 25, 1965 (scorer Curry) and by the same scoreline on August 24, 1974 (scorer Clarke), thus ensuring the first Stags away win since December 16, 1972, a 4-0 thrashing at Crewe.

Memorable thrashings:

* April 22, 1924, saw the Stags biggest Midlands Counties League win against Scunthorpe, and this at Field Mill. Three goals from Jack Flint, two from A E Donoven and one from Thomas Lawrie melted the Iron.

* 51 years later, nearly exactly to the day, April 21, 1975. Two goals apiece from Clarke and Lathan, one each from Bird, Hodgson and Eccles in front of 11020 at the Mill saw the Stags clinch their first-ever championship by hammering Scunthorpe 7-0. That night, the Iron fielded one of the West Ham FA cup killers six years earlier: Dudley Roberts.

* October 26, 1991. Two goals from Steve Wilkinson, one apiece from Phil Stant and Steve Charles, latter converting a penalty, fixed the 4-1 mauling at the Old Showground.

* On August 26, 2003, the Stags recorded their biggest league win of that season. Day, Mendes, Lawrence (2) and Christie contributed to the 5-0 rout in front of 5142, and the winning margin should have been even higher!

Only on six occasions have Scunthorpe won at Mansfield in the FL. Four of those came in a spell of six games without a Stags win, two draws and four reverses between April 13, 1982 and August 28, 1993.

Scunthorpe are also known for unearthing England internationals such as Ray Clemence in goal and Kevin Keegan, both later to play for Liverpool. Richard Money, who has managed Swedish club AIK Stockholm as well as Västerås SK, another Swedish championship side, also learned his league ABC at the Iron, managed the Iron around 1993-1994, and was Walsall manager when the Stags beat the Saddlers to a 2-1 scoreline at home in January 2007. Nigel Adkins, with PL managerial experience at Southampton and Reading last season, managed Scunthorpe in the Championship by the time of beating Newcastle in 2009.

As expected, considering the short distance between the towns, several players (see list below), have appeared for both sides, even when non-league. Among them are one of the West Ham KO heroes, Dudley Roberts and the one out-field player with most league appearences, Tony Ford. And Sid Ottewell must have been the first player coming from Stags to Scunthorpe in league history when being transferred in March 1952.

The date April 20 is also the one on which the Stags secured their two latest promotions. The first one, against Carlisle in 2002, was watched live by the previewer while the one against Wrexham in 2013 was partly watched on telly in Sweden, most of the second half and the celebrations.

Played for both sides: James Alabi, Tomi Ameobi, Ian Baraclough, Neal Bishop, Junior Brown, Matthew Carmichael, Steve Charles, Wayne Corden, Graeme Crawford, Digger Daley, Craig Davies, Stephen Dawson, Tony Ford, Terry Hawkridge, Ian Helliwell, Darius Henderson, Stuart Hicks, Kevan Hurst, Guy Ipoua, Ian Juryeff, Billy Kee, Jim Lumby, Neil Mackenzie, David Mirfin, Doug O’Connor, Luke O’Neill, Bobby Olejnik, Sid Ottewell, Noel Parkinson, Malcolm Partridge, Krystian Pearce, Martin Pemberton, James Perch, Nicky Platnauer, Michael Raynes, Dudley Roberts, George Taft, Stuart Thom, Barrie Thomas, Luke Waterfall, Paul Wheatcroft, Jason White (forward), Alan Wilson.

Adam Gibson, Dickey Donoven, Chris Hackett, Harrison (1909), Joe Hill, Ibbotson (1912), Arthur Reed and William Robinson were players who starred for both sides before the Stags inaugural league season 1931-32.

Cheers Svante. The 7-0 is probably my most vivid memory of the Stags in the 70's.

The memorable & iconic 4-1 mauling in 1991 was played at Glanford Park and not the Old Showground.
Apart from that these reports are excellent as always and much anticipated.
