Time to vote for Chad Stags Player of the Year

Postby Chadman » Tue Apr 13, 2021 7:59 am

I have opened the vote this morning for Chad Readers' Stags Player of the Year.

https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/v ... ar-3198653

It's been a strange old season with some inconsistent performances by the team and individuals, so it's far from an easy choice this time around.

A big thank you everyone who has been reading the much improved coverage of the club on the Chad web site over the pasty couple of weeks after my year on furlough and here's to a big finish to the season (and the pubs re-opening)!

Just voted

It’s a tough one as the players you want to pick haven’t really played that much due to injury etc I originally thought Lapslie but he missed a large chunk of games, same as Ollie Clarke.

Jason law didn’t really come in until 2021.

So I’ve gone for someone that I feel had played a lot and has dramatically improved as the season as gone on, George Maris.

Looking forward to some debate in here while I make my mind up. My shortlist:

Lapslie. His run of goal scoring form pre-injury helped lift us out of the relegation fight and we’d really be in the poop if that hadn’t have happened.

Bowery. Transformed under Clough and started to score goals, really important in that run of form.

Maris. I think he’s brilliant in that defensive midfield role, finds his man almost all of the time.

Perch. Moved into defence and added stability, I was going to say Rawson has been there an much improved but I think it’s coincided with Perch’s influence but that’s just my opinion.

Anyone else?

Benning? Not been a great season and he did hit a milestone in appearances this season?

Nobody has stood out over the whole season. It'd have to be a central midfielder, they've been the most consistent.

Lapsilie for me. The fact he has played so little and is still player of the season speaks volumes, but think he has been the difference between us staying up (hopefully) and going down.

Rawson deserves a mention too, been pretty consistent all season, especially since Clough came in.

Think he will be a big player for us next season.

Agree with that

Even when fans criticised him under CG for not scoring enough goals it was obvious Bowery was massively important to our side especially this season with his work rate.

When NC came in he added a few goals alongside that work rate, along with playing almost every minute makes him an easy choice based on an entire season in my opinion

Maris wasn’t great under GC and has missed quite a few games with injury the same for Laps

a reminder of the average player ratings that part time pete posted

Subject: Latest player's ratings averages

part time pete wrote:As you know, Martin Shaw gives players a rating after every games as well as fans do if they log on to Eggy's survey on here.

Both surveys have the similar average ratings for the players.

I have grouped the players into above average compared to team mates, average and below average and only players still available to be picked this season and have started at least three games before the Grimsby game. Numbers in brackets are number of starts. 42 is maximum.

The above average group are
7.06 Lapslie (22)
6.95 O.Clarke (25)
6.81 Quinn (11)
6.81 Law (8 )
6.79 Maris (31)
6.71 Charsley (34)
6.70 Bowery (33)

The average group are
6.63 Perch (23)
6.61 Gordon (26)
6.61 O'Keefee (11)
6.60 Sweeney (32)
6.57 Benning (27)

The below average group are
6.50 Rawson (38)
6.50 Sinclair (3)
6.48 Stone (14)
6.48 McLaughlin (24)
6.44 Reid (28)
6.42 Stech (28)

Don't think there are any surprises, except perhaps Rawson and Sweeney might change before end of season.

Goalkeeper's scores seem low but actually they never seem to get tested and hence don't score more than a 7. They only get noticed when they drop a clanger.

Maris has played the 4th most league minutes in our squad. He’s missed out on 6 games.

Lapslie has only featured in 24/41 games, so it shows what an impact he’s made.

Surprised at that it feels like Maris has missed more. He certainly ‘went missing’ in quite a few games early on in the season.

But under NC he has been a vast improvement, based on that period alone he has been excellent.

Over the entire season Bowery efforts still gets my vote.

Rawson for me, who interestingly is in Martins below average group  I think he has had an outstanding end to the season, very consistent - Bowery a close second, he just needs a goal scoring strike partner.

I don't think we've had a single outstanding player, some have played well in patches but over the whole season its really hard to pick one.

I agree with many above. Perch or Maris for me.

Rawson has been good since Clough came in and Lapslie has missed too many games, although I think he’s our best player

and the fans average too. I suspect you have blocked out the first half of the season.

Lapslie, Perch, Bowery. One of those for me, I'd probably pick Lapslie because he's great to watch when he's in form
