Forest Green Rovers sack head coach Cooper

Forest Green Rovers have sacked head coach Mark Cooper after almost five years with the League Two club.

The 52-year-old's dismissal came after a poor run of six matches without a win and four consecutive defeats left them sixth in the table.

Cooper had led the club to promotion to the English Football League at the end of his first season with the club.

"This decision we've made is about giving ourselves the best chance of promotion," chairman Dale Vince said.

"Despite our collective efforts, we've been unable to halt our slide in form, which has the potential to take us out of contention this season."

Under-18s boss Jimmy Ball takes over from Cooper, whose contract was due to end next month, until the end of the season.

The club had been four points clear in third place after beating Harrogate on 13 March but have since slipped down the table.

Saturday's defeat at struggling Walsall was Forest Green's fourth in a row and sixth loss in their past 10 league games, with the club now five points off the automatic promotion places.

"I've enjoyed working with Mark these last five years, he's made a big contribution to the club and will always be a friend," Vince added.

"In football sometimes you just need to make a change - and with Mark's contract ending next month, and us needing a change in the next six games, this feels like the right decision."
Endeavoring to persevere since 1965 (8-1 home win against QPR)

They struggle against the better sides so I guess that was a worry that they’re heading for the play-offs again. 16th in the L2 form table since December.

Hope they get promoted. Awful away day. Then next season they get relegated as we go up.

Mark Cooper over saw a historic promotion to the football league, and in his 5 years became one of the longest serving coaches in English football, and Forest Green Rovers have fared well in league 2, Expectations and change are prominent in football, and the future will determine where 2-500 gates will get you, the club are stable under his stewardship.
Certainly the next Head coach will have a good base to work with

Very interesting development at FGR.

I think their progressive approach in general should be applauded. I know some of their principles are not to everyone’s taste, but the eco-friendly stuff they do is great.

Re a female manager. I see no reason why a woman could not succeed in coaching and managing a men’s team. They will of course have challenges but nothing that should be insurmountable.

I do question the timing though. If they gave the run in to this season to a woman, and she failed to get them promoted then it really would be light in to touch paper for those who are vehemently against anything different being tried.

Whilst being open in principle to women managers, the sad fact is that there isn’t a single female coach with the experience to take on a league club unaided. Even most rookie managers have either coaching experience or have played at league level.

As a fan I would want my manager to have at least a supporting role in first team league football. As we know to our cost, a lower standard doesn’t work.

The ex Scotland manageress was the first woman to coach in the male lower leaguess and there is a French woman who managed in the French league 2 for a few years, it really wouldn't surprise me for forest green to go this way.
The commercial interest would be massive.

Mmmm Scottish lower leagues, is that about conference north or even lower?. And how did they do? It’s ok having commercial interest as long as they are actually up to the job. We all call managers and extract the Michael but it is actually quite a challenging job which is easily messed up.

Whatever happens it will be a very brave chairperson who takes the risk.
