Nigel Clough on squad size for next season:
"We think we've got the nucleus of a good squad. We're talking about bringing in the region of 5, 6, 7 players, something like that, just to bolster it. We've always worked on the lines of 16, 17 senior outfield players, 3 goalkeepers, and 2 or 3 youngsters on top of that."

3 Goalkeepers
New Keeper 1
New Keeper 2
Marek Stech or Aidan Stone

17 Senior Outfield Players
Kellan Gordon
James Perch
Stephen McLaughlin
Farrend Rawson
George Maris
George Lapslie
Ollie Clarke
Stephen Quinn (assuming he will sign)
Harry Charsley
Jordan Bowery
Jamie Reid
New Signing 1 (Centre Half x 1)
New Signing 2 (Centre Half x 2)
New Signing 3 (Left Back)
New Signing 4 (Midfield/Wide Player)
New Signing 5 (Forward x 1)
New Signing 6 (Forward x 2)

3 Youngsters
Jason Law
Tyrese Sinclair
Jimmy Knowles

I think we need a new right back as well Tippy. Gordon is a total liability in that position and Perch won’t make a full season playing every game there either. The only solution is a new player if we are going to make a serious challenge.

I think he disagreed when he gave him the contract but not anymore. He has made it plain that he was not happy with him and has dropped him from the team. I think that shows his current thought pattern.

James Clark showed more in the last 20 minutes when he came on than Gordon did earlier in the match.

I think Clarke and Ward are very unlucky if they are released

I’ve always liked Clarke who I think is a good prospect. It looks like Keatons decision to join Barnsley may not have been a good one with hindsight- if he had stayed he would probably have made the grade.

An interesting close season

I'm pretty sure that in a recent interview Nigel Clough said he was happy with our midfield, and included Ward in the names he mentioned, so I assume he'll be retained. I thought he had an exceptional full debut on Saturday, never panicked, sprayed some accurate passes about, and didn't tire. One game isn't enough to go on, but it was encouraging.

We normally keep 3 or 4 lads on from the current youth team. Are there any up and coming stars in that group? Nathan Caine?

And then there are the likes of Aiden Walker, Josh Scott, Kian Sketchley, Kyle Tomlin etc. What has happened to them?

The truth is that there will be loads of good young players being released by Premier League and Championship clubs and they are likely to be better than our current young lads including the likes of Keaton Ward, Jamie Clarke and even Jason Law. Football is a ruthless business.

Clearly we'll be signing at least a couple of strikers.

I'm not sure how Jamie Reid will view his future if he's third choice striker. He's too old to sit on the sidelines for a season awaiting another chance, and I just can't see him forcing his way back into the side unless he gets lucky with players being injured. I don't expect other League 2 sides to be queueing to entice him away from the Stags either, as his strike rate is awful. So I guess that he'll have to accept that he's getting paid to watch football, although Nigel seems to rate him highly (for obscure reasons) and he might still play a part.

We really need a striker with pace, and another with finishing power, if we're ever to get promotion. I know that some sides manage without, but it's a clever feat. Jamie Reid doesn't have either, he's a hard worker with some qualities, reads the game well, but doesn't have pace, guile or a cool finish. Jordan Bowery is another hard worker and scares defences, but clearly feels at home as provider rather than finisher. Not good enough when he's passing the ball from a shooting position. With our excellent midfield we should have been winning most of those drawn matches, but I feel that the strikers need too many chances and the word "clinical" is rarely mentioned when talking about any Stags striker.

I don't mind taking another chance with a non-league striker, perhaps Danilo Orsi-Dadomo or someone else who is trying to impress by working his way up the leagues. Allied to a pacy young hopeful, with Laplie and Sinclair backing up, we'd at least start matches with a forward line feared by the opposition; and that's almost a goal start every game.

I agree that the lads getting released from above will be better and have championed the idea of focusing on them for some time.

My opinion differs from yours on James Clarke. He was released from above and I think he’ll make a very capable understudy to Perch at right back. He has played a fair few games now and never let us down. Stone is the same, although he has made a couple of bad errors.

I think Law has done enough to show he is capable at this level, but should only be as cover for The midfielders. This should give him the chance to try and develop into a first teamed.

Sinclair is very similar to Law, but as a striker. He could be one to bring us a good transfer fee in the next two seasons.

I’d keep Ward but get him on loan. If he can prove himself in the National League, then he’s got a chance.

Knowles needs another season on loan too I think.

Clough clearly likes Caine, but he needs some first team football too. Loan him out.

The rest will be released in my opinion

If Torquay get promoted, I wouldn’t be surprised if Reid went back there.

No, expires in the summer.

But Clough mentioned he would be invited to pre-season.

Ah, I thought he was a summer signing where everyone got 2 year deals. But he signed in January window.

Yes, initial 6 month deal then extended by a year last summer.

That's likely where my confusion came from.

I see EFL Hub are suggesting that Morecambe are interested in Keaton Ward.

Keaton needs to go to a club where he will get played. He may not get played at the Stags because our midfield is already strong and will get stronger.

I agree.... Because there is no way he is in front of Quinn, Maris, laps or Clarke in the pecking order.

I am not trying to play down a young mans future but he's not good enough (yet, not saying he won't be) to mount a promotion push.

if we do go up the leagues, then his chances of getting game time reduces.

He will be cheap, but is he going to want to waste his early years sat on the bench? He'd be better off getting into a the lower leagues and establishing himself down there. A bit like Ali smith really

Law, Sinclair, Ward, Knowles, are talented youngsters who have to make very important decisions, Law and Sinclair have signed new deals, Having worked under the influence of Clough
i am sure it will be in their best interest to trust his judgement, He has guided many on to successful career,

I hope you are right Musings, but he would need a run in the team to prove himself.
