Sir Mal Appearances

Postby Stagdale » Fri Feb 26, 2021 4:11 pm

I believe Sir Mal made his 200th appearance for the club a few games ago. Assuming this is correct anyone know if the club gave him some kind of award in reaching this milestone? If they didn't that is a bit shabby.

he made his 200th appearance for the Stags at Oldham 6.5 weeks ago, then his 300th appearance in all competitions and for all clubs at Southend 5 weeks ago.

I'm not aware that he was given any award.

His country?

He was born in Birmingham. Did we lose to ourselves?

Malvind Singh Benning (born 2 November 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for League Two club Mansfield Town. He began his career with Walsall and had loan spells with Evesham United and York City.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we did actually beat ourselves though

You are not wrong Dan. I have never seen anything so inconsistent as our top order, not even the Stags back four!

His form has dropped over the last 2 years and Cloughie as sussed him. He will be gone at the end of the season.

It’s a difficult one, it has been notoriously hard to find a decent left back.

I agree that Sir Mal hasn’t been as good as he was, i think the big injury took a bit of pace and confidence from him. i’d still rate him as good as half the divisions left backs but he was up with the very best for 2 or 3 years here. If Clough knows someone then i expect him to bring in his own man especially if he’s trying out Law there this season.

I think we need Mal Benning back in the side, Mcloughlin just isn't good enough, his corners and defending are poor, he works hard with little end result. Put Mc on the bench.

Hard for Sir Mal to shine with some of the weak willed players GC brought in. Messi'd struggle to look good.

The short break seems to have rejuvenated him and he's looking good. If he can resist taking shots and accept that the worldies are in the past, he's going to retain his place. He's a great team player, more incisive and consistent than McLaughlin and better defensively.

He is a defender, a good defender though has in recent seasons had his form diluted by managers wanting him to be a winger, wing back etc. A case, similar to that of modern footballs need for a goalkeeper to be able to play one touch football with everyone his own side of the halfway line. Defenders, defend and that way they do their part of a good team.

As for the worldies, that’s just what they are, a ‘once a blue moon occurrence’. A bit like Forest Town Stag getting the beer in. And it should stay that way - Mal’s worldies and not FTS going to the bar.

We look far better with Benning in the side. He gives an attacking balance to the left. Still massively underrated here though despite years of service and he’s seen off a number of challengers to his place. I hope he stays for a good few years yet.

I agree with your agreement.

He's been my favourite Stags player of the post-BSP era.

Thought Mal played very well yesterday and didn’t put a foot wrong.
