A strange move from both the club and Flitcroft.

Might be a shrewd move that, if he can help them build a philosophy and infrastructure they might be onto a winner

He's better than that. He should be in the dugout somewhere.

Shirley this'll spark off another Flitcroft - Scottish manager debate.

Strange in the fact they’ve appointed someone to a role they’ve never performed before. Especially when he openly applied and wanted the Managers job and they have him DOF instead.

David Flitcroft

"During his time in management he has a proven track record of developing young players which clubs have been able to sell on."

I think a few fans and directors may disagree with him on that point.

"Dave will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of football operations at Port Vale – from the development of training facilities and enhancement of coaching, backroom support and analysis to player recruitment and development."

DF did not have a great recruitment record at Stags. Port Vale would have been better off appointing Micky Moore or Adam Murray as Head of Recruitment.

Players Signed by David Flitcroft
Craig Davies - Transfer Fee Paid
Otis Khan - Transfer Fee Paid (£100,000 according to Yeovil Town)
Matt Preston - Transfer Fee Paid
Neal Bishop
Ryan Sweeney (On loan and then Transfer Fee paid)
Tyler Walker (On loan from Nottingham Forest)
Timi Elsnik (On loan from Derby County)
Nicky Ajose (On loan from Charlton)
Jorge Grant (On loan from Nottingham Forest)
Jordan Smith (On loan from Nottingham Forest)
Gethin Jones (On loan from Fleetwood Town)
Ben Turner
Will Tomlinson
Jake Kean (Short Term Contract)

Bad news for Carole Shanahan. DF will just be urging her to spend more money but the salary cap may save her.

Very strange appointing him as Head of Recruitment. He probably blew £750,000 of JR and the club's money on Craig Davies and Otis Khan in transfer fees, salaries and signing on fees.

Adam Murray is 7/2 3rd favourite for Port Vale manager's job behind John McGreal and Danny Pugh.

Flitcroft says on his interview that it won’t be Pugh, he doesn’t want it. Although I think the bookies pay out if the interim boss takes charge of a certain amount of games.

I was in the exec box not long ago vs Vale. I had lunch at the same table as Norman Smurthwaite and can confirm he is a massive ****.

Stoke Sentinel (Mike Baggaley)

Every word of our interview with Port Vale director of football David Flitcroft

Will he mention working hard on the training ground?

Really strange one.

He used to talk about wanting to be out on the grass when he was here and no doubt he was a good coach and man manager. He really inspired CJ and probably oversaw the best part of his development.

His record in the transfer market was average at best though with more misses than hits.

He spent a lot of money of luxuries such as overnight stays and training at St George’s park etc too.

I’m not sure he fits the DoF role well at all

For sure he will be there to galvanise them - apologies if this has been said before.

Pleased for him but like others have said DoF seems a strange job for him to be in.

As for his signings some were good when he was here, apart from the crock or should that be crook Davies the other disappointment was Otis Khan, on paper he was a fantastic signing.
