A striker being encouraged to do some finishing after training , something he wasn’t doing before . What is he doing during training? . It can’t all be stamina and tactics can it .

Bill Dearden once said Chris Grreenacre spent a lot of time after training doing that.

Given the short turn around between games over the Christmas period it would have been a day to recover and then straight into shape and set pieces I would guess.

Passing drills too. No use practicing just finishing if you aren't doing drills improving the passing, movement and team shape.

We played Saturday and played well so they'd get Sunday off, today would be a light session so probably working on set pieces (we've not done great at them recently) and/or a passing drill (basically no/light contact drills) then they will be in tomorrow to go through what to expect from Salford (which could also be linked to what we did in training today).

For strikers they do practice finishing it's just secondary to the main aim. You do attacking training, chance creation etc then the striker has to finish it but there could be 2/3/4 passes before the finish whereas finishing training is it just the pass to the striker to finish in a predetermined spot. Not much use to the team if every player practicises it for an hour or 2.during the main training sessions.

Not suggesting every player practices finishing nor am I suggesting any player should concentrate on one thing. I am also not surprised that someone has got better at something they have been practicing.

for anyone unable to watch the video, a couple of key bits:

Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags:
"Andy Garner has been encouraging Jordan Bowery to do finishing after training, which apparently he didn't do before.
"And I think scoring's a habit, whether it's in training or in games. Doing that finishing and building his confidence.
"His third goal, and the move from the team, is a goal of the season contender, and his finish was exemplary.

"(On the transfer window, any update?) ... No, unfortunately. We're going through our list of targets, making contacts, and seeing what's out there available. But nothing's changed in terms of two or three players in, with a similar number going out to make way."

Lots of ex strikers who are now pundits are always saying the best thing to do to build your confidence as a striker is to take a bag of balls onto the training pitch and just smash them into the net. You don’t even need a keeper. Just doing that will build your confidence.
