Ian Holloway: Grimsby Town manager quits

Ian Holloway has quit as Grimsby Town manager amid talks of a potential takeover of the League Two club.

The 57-year-old posted a series of messages on Twitter announcing his departure.

He said he leaves "with a heavy heart" but said he was prompted to do so after majority shareholder John Fenty told him of his intention to sell.

"It's time for a fresh start across the board for this great club," Holloway wrote.
Endeavoring to persevere since 1965 (8-1 home win against QPR)

Yet a few weeks ago said he wouldn't leave unless someone told him to...

Think we can all see he's got a hard job to do anything with them and this is the perfect excuse to step away from something he doesn't really need.

He set the groundwork for this a few days ago when he started tweeting about the situation at the club.

Didn't he say, when appointed, he had invested money into the club?

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too...

Holloway wasn't the man for the Mariners
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.

I called this last night although he sounded a little happier in his post match interview and he had just recruited a goalkeeping coach from Blackpool who was living in a caravan. He sounded on the edge of walking out last week. It's a good job he did not sell his house and buy £100,000 shares in Grimsby.

His record at Grimsby was :

2019-2020: P14 W6 D3 L5
2020-2021: P19 W5 D4 L10
Total: P33 W11 D7 L15

Win Rate: 33.3%

They will struggle to find a more experienced manager at this level.

If John Fenty finally sells up then the new owners will want to bring their own man in so probably a wise move for Ian Holloway to walk away. It gave him an exit route as well after the fiasco of the fraudster, Alex May, setting up a business with Fenty and then wanting to buy shares in the club.

T'is a pity Sir Jack's not on t'list, ex player, well liked by Mariners fans. Has a great record in management at his last club, finished 2nd strongest team in the league. Would be a great appointment imo ;)

Bad news for Grimsby fans. John Fenty has rejected the offer to buy his shares in the club and repay his loans over a period of time.

It looks like Ian Holloway was approached indirectly by Tom Shutes and his consortium.

Dean Holdsworth is also involved so that is further bad news.

The more you read about John Fenty, a Conservative councilor who has just resigned as the lead officer from the Regeneration Committee of the Council, the more you wonder what his motives are.

Made all staff, allegedly, take a 25% pay cut after furlough and by all accounts is not one as a player to be messed with during contract negotiations.

A sort of Haslam / Meale hybrid. Grimsby is a great day out and I would hate for it to disappear due to the avaricious nature of one man.

One day, when the truth is told without spin or slant the only ones coming out with any dignity will yet again be the fans. As the Propellor Heads with Shirley Bassey once sang, ‘All just another case of history repeating’.

Paul Hurst has been appointed as the new Grimsby manager with Chris Doig appointed as his assistant.
