08/12/20: Grimsby Town 0 Newport County 2
Possession: 58:42%
The Mighty Mariners are all over the plaice at the moment and have lots of injuries. They were poor last night and only created two chances all game. Montel Gibson shot wide at the far post in the 1st half and sub, Owen Windsor (on loan), rocketed a free kick against the bar in the 2nd half. Newport did not have to get out of second gear. Danny Rose gave away a silly penalty just before half time which former Cod player, Padraig Amond, tucked away. Danny Rose was then subbed at half time by Ian Holloway. Grimsby did play well against Col U away in the previous game and were unlucky to lose 2-1.
They have lots of young loan players. Owura Edwards (on loan from Bristol City) is lively up out wide and can make quick runs forward with the ball. Owen Windsor (on loan from West Brom) is a decent young attacking player. He won the game for them away at Orient. Danny Preston (on loan from Forest) has done ok at left back but he is out injured. They also have Terry Taylor (on loan from Wolves), James Morton (on loan from Bristol City), Virgil Gomis (on loan from Forest) and the experienced, Kyle Bennett (on loan from Bristol Rovers).
Luke Waterfall and Matty Pollock are decent centre halfs and Luke Hendrie (nephew of Lee Hendrie) has played well at right back. Harry Clifton will probably fill in at left back.
Ian Holloway is trying to play past fast possession football on the floor like he did at Blackpool. He dropped James McKeown last night for Sam Russell because he said James McKeown was kicking the ball too long against Col U. He is short of forward players as James Hanson and Matt Green are still out injured for another month or more. Midfielders, Sean Scannell, James Tilley and Max Wright are also injured.
Ian Holloway said they played well against Newport because he is trying to boost the players' confidence. He really hammered the players after they got knocked out of the FA Cup by the Daggers and lost in the B Team Trophy to a young Hull City side. He threatened changes to the squad before the game at Tranmere and said he was going to have to get players out. They then got battered 5-0. He has learnt his lesson and realises he is stuck with these players until January and cannot change anything. He's therefore tried to be more positive since then. He's normally quite funny but he's been getting grimmer as the season has progressed and relations between him and the local media have started to get frosty. John Tondeur on BBC Radio Humberside has been giving him good grillings after Grimsby defeats.
Ian Holloway would be absolutely insane at the moment to sell his house and move up to Grimsby and invest £100,000 in the club in shares but that is what he is planning to do. It looks like it is all going to end in tears as it normally does in football.
