Average ref ratings after 15 games (League only)

Postby Sweden Stag » Thu Dec 03, 2020 3:22 pm

Courtesy of the Stagsnet reports, regardless of results in League games only, I have checked the ref ratings including the Cambridge away game so here they are:

REF RATINGS 2020-21 (LEAGUE ONLY)

Game Opponent Venue Result Ref Rating
1 Tranmere H D James Bell 7
2 Leyton Orient A D David Rock 7
3 Exeter H L Christopher Pollard 5
4 Newport A L Sam Allison 5
5 Stevenage H D Sebastian Stockbridge 7
6 Bradford City H L Paul Howard 6
7 Morecambe A D Marc Edwards 4
8 Cheltenham A D Neil Hair 6
9 Barrow H L Keith Stroud 7
10 Walsall H D Alan Young 5
11 Bolton A D Andy Haines 5
12 Forest Green A W Brett Huxtable 4
13 Colchester H D Ben Speedie 7
14 Harrogate H L Carl Boyeson 7
15 Cambridge A W Rob Lewis 7

The average ref rating so far is bettered a little bit due to the 7 rating at Cambridge and is now bettered from 5.857 to 5.933. The rating at Cambridge was the third consecutive 7 rating. There has been two ratings of 4, awarded in away games at Morecambe and Forest Green respectively.

Total list after 15 games:

Rating 4: Two
Rating 5: Four
Rating 6: Two
Rating 7: Seven
Rating 8: None
Rating 9: None
Rating 10: Has never happened to a ref in Stagsnet match report history, but rating 9 has been given.

Notable is also that we haven't had either Darren Drysdale or Charles Breakspear since the end of the 2018-19 season.

I imagine the only ones not happy with fans coming back are the refs. :D
Must be lonely too, running up and down the line without the abuse.

Might be a good way of getting them on our side, by singing Have you missed us referee!!!

It's difficult to rate referees. To me the ideal refereeing performance is when you were hardly aware of the official being there. But he'll only get a 7 for that, even though maybe it appeared easy only because the ref was brilliant at preventing any indiscipline taking hold.

If players clash on the pitch and make the match a nightmare for the ref, you could see it as poor refereeing in that discipline was so poor because he should have nipped the trouble in the bud. Or, if he swaggers about brandishing cards, perhaps you see it as a great performance in trying circumstances. Or not, depending on how it affects the result!
