So on to Morecambe

Postby pemill » Sun Oct 18, 2020 8:54 am

Well there is no doubt in my mind that Cook and Stone must start, they both deserve their place in the starting XI.
I would go with Maynard up front with Cook purely for his experience.

To change things up and do something different from the start I'd go 4-4-2 with a back four of Benning, Sweeney, O'Driscoll, & Gordon, maybe go with an element of surprise and go 4-3-3, same back four with Reid making the extra striker. The current formula obviously isn't working may as-well try something else.

. . . . . . . . . . . . Stone
Gordan - O'Driscoll - Sweeney - Benning
Charsley - Perch - Sinclair - McLaughlin
. . . . . . . . . . Cook - Maynard

Perch in there to be the midfield defensive anchor man, Sinclair in for that bit of flair.

I'm not saying I'm a fan of 4-4-2 in the modern game but it might be what's needed to in still some confidence.

What is the thinking behind Gordon for O'Keefe?
I do get that he has become less effective /confident but not convinced Gordon is the answer. I would keep O'Keefe if it was a back four

Really, the back 3 are bad but gets no help whatsoever from the lightweight midfield, they don't help the forwards either so what do they do?

I can see him going:

Stech
Menayese Rawson Sweeney
O'Keeffe McLaughlin
Maris Perch Charsley
Bowery Reid/Cook

I feel Reid would be his preferred choice but Cook scored.

What I think we need to do.

Stone
O'Keeffe Menayese Sweeney benning
Gordon Maris Perch McLaughlin
Maynard Cook

We need back to basics which includes a basic formation. Everyone in their natural positions and go from there.

Focus play down the wings, get to the byline and cross Cook and Maynard have enough in their locker to be a threat from crosses.

In his post match he said if he could have subbed all eleven at half time he would have done.

So next game starting line up will include no one who started against Bradford, or was he just saying things for the sake of it?

He’s lost the flipping plot mate. He needs moving on for his own mental health. He looked a lost man.

He can't swap the entire 11, according to the rules, can he?

Maris needs dropping for me, he doesn’t look mobile enough and is completely right footed.

He needs to go 4 at back, O keefe for me keeps getting caught out defensively, Cook needs to start.

Will he drop Stech? The “he’s my goalkeeper” Comment tells me he won’t.

THIS. Cant remember the manager but when asked about promotion he was very smug and said league two defenders cant handle crosses, get it out wide and put it on a big mans head its simple. Im sure it was Bury and they scored 40% of goals from crosses. And it was very much Big man little man up top. Same for Wycombe when they went up.

EFL highlights on quest always shows similar patterns for the average goal scored.

Championship: a lot of good goals created, well worked nice football, odd mistake.
League one: some well worked goals, some from balls pumped quickly into the box
League two: Mistakes from poor defending, goals from crosses/ set pieces. Rare moments of brilliance.

I wasn't sure. I knew it was the rule in the cup but couldn't remember if there was similar wording for league games, to prevent teams putting out severely weakened teams against certain opponents.

So do we think the change to 442 improved us that much that he will feel he needs to play it on Tuesday?

In isolation. It was 1st half a 2-0 loss with his version of 3-5-2. It was a 1-1 draw in the second half with 10 men with 4-4-2.

There are factors to consider. We were essentially dead and buried 15 minutes into the second half, Bradford had a 3 goal cushion. This was compounded 30 minutes into the half when we went down to 10 men. Bradford barely had to break a sweat at this point. So it's hard to say 4-4-2 from the start would have yielded a better result. Our goals conceded are gereally from individual errors. Those individuals would still be in the team in a 4-4-2.

-------------------- Stone ---------------------
O'Keefe -- O'Driscoll -- Sweeney -- Benning
----------------------Perch---------------------
----------- Clarke ----------- Charsley--------
------ Reid----------------------McLaughlin--
---------------------- Cook --------------------

Labslie would be in for Charsely if available
Can switch to 442 without subs
Can switch to 433 and bring Maynard on for McLaughlan

Sorted...

Morecambe are probably the worst side in our division. Have been thrashed three times already this season and recently we only need to roll.up at their place to bring back three points. Nailed on away win if we cut out the stupid individual mistakes.

Eh? I’d love to be as bad as them, 6th in the league with 4 wins out of 6.

They’ve had a few bad losses but they’ve got an average of 2 points per game and have won 4 league games out of 6. They might be erratic but I don’t think the stats suggest they are the worst team. I suspect that is currently a choice between us, Southend, Stevenage and Oldham (maybe).

The rules on number of changes only apply in the league after March.
