That's just not true, after the Newport game we beat FGR, Cambridge, thrashed Exeter 4-1 away and put 4 past Cheltenham and Morecambe. Yes we had some tough games and lost the automatic spot on the final day, but our downfall definitely began with his sacking and subsequent dismantling of his squad.

Factually that is difficult to argue with

Where were mansfield on feb 9th and how many points clear where they?

Where were they at the end of the season when it mattered?

Again, had flitcroft and his side not choked on such a spectacular manner maybe we wouldn’t be here, ultimately him choking cost us an obvious promotion and couldn’t be trusted.

He had half a season to formulate a plan B and couldn’t do so

We're now 23rd Adam and you are complaining about dropping to 4th. That season was the highest we have finished since 2002. The football we played was more often than not a joy to watch, the players (apart from the useless Diamond and Anderson) were happy and the Mill was buzzing on match day. Yes we lost 2 or 3 crucial games towards the end of the season but seriously do you really think we are in a better place now?

This raspberrys about choking is just drivel, we just lost a few games at the wrong time. In the play offs we all know Newport should have had a player sent off early on and things may have been different. As it was we should have given DF at least until.Christmas to put a few small things right. We didn't, this has directly led to 2 x relegation battles.

This is in no way related to whether the manager should stay or go, is or isn’t good enough, or whatever, but you can’t talk about relegation battles after 6 games. It’s madness.

No, I don’t buy it.

There’s no reference in there to his lack of ability of creating a plan b to his tactics. He was found out and didn’t have a plan and at the time the decision was correct to get rid of him.

The choice on who got took on afterwards is a different matter.

You reference us playing newport, we shouldn’t been playing newport in the playoffs in the first place, it was all part of the choke.

Anyone who watched that particular game all know that the penalty awarded against Conrad Logan late on was wrongly awarded. That refereeing performance was also easily by loads of Swedish miles (one Swedish mile=10 kilometres) the far worst in any Stags game I have been able to watch over the years, either live or on telly. That performance warranted Stagsnet rating 4 to me, but was very close to a 0 rating. Enough said.

The DF lovers go on and on about his style of football and he just lost a few games.
It was not always the players fault we did not get enough points to win promotion, it was the DFs live match decisions that cost us dozens of points. Early in the season in October 2018 his decision making was negative and expensive and cost us dearly. Anybody supporting stags at the Bury away game that finished 2-2 will remember his tactics. To remind those with a tainted memory stags were winning 1-2 with seven minutes of normal time to play. DF takes off Danny rose having earlier took off Tyler walker leaving us with no strikers on the pitch AT ALL and playing an 11 man defense. Not surprisingly we lost the three points to a late Maynard equaliser that a two year old child could see coming. We were not playing good fluid football and it was not a pleasure to watch. I know i was there and witnessed the fans reaction leaving the ground. We were 11 games into the season and fans were not happy with DF and his crap tactics. Nothing changes really does it. Its MTFC and league two get used to it and forget DF for good.

However, the signs of relegation are there plainly for everyone to see. Where is a win coming from ? (No wins so far this season in all competitions). A team with no confidence. A team that can't defend. A team that can't finish chances. A team that is overrun in midfield. And a team that cannot be strengthened until January.

Its the manager and his crap tactics that are the problem again. We have a good strong base of players playing the wrong tactics and formation which is causing the lack of form and little confidence, Change the mindset of the three at the back which even to a blind man is not working and go to a 442 or 433 for home games and we will start to win games. Football is not a complicated game if you mark your players do your job and give 100% you will pick up points and gain confidence. Stick to a failed plan and you are planning to fail. Change it GC or you are gone with four more games nailed on and DF wont be coming in not even in your wet dreams rob

Coming from DF country its not surprising that you have a brown streak all the way down your nose is it or should I say innit. There is no way that loser should be associated with our football club again you moron. We may not have the right manager here at this moment in time but Flooooking DF is not it either

OK that's one game. Did he do it again or did he learn from it? Besides that game, if I remember correctly, we had a clear penalty denied in the 97th minute. Also in that game I believe walker was not having a good game.

I'm sure butcher and Hamilton played up front. Hamilton did OK and butcher had 10-15 minutes. That game the ref also added something stupid like 7 or 8 minutes on the end, which gave Bury a lift.

It's all a bit meaningless now but we beat Bury at home that season, beat a team in the automatics at home and drew away. An people are still complaining about that. A mark of a good side is one that still picks up points in most of the games they don't play well in. We did that, whether you want to admit it or not. Teams have off days, that also happens.

It was incorrect to sack him when we did. It would have been correct to sack him the following season if we didn't get promoted. Because it would have been all his own team with no players taking up a wage and not playing from the previous year. Failure again would have seen no improvement, whereas a playoff place was a huge improvement on most of the previous 20+ years. That's why it was wrong to sack him when we did. there's no worshipping the ground he walks on, as many like to claim, just signs of improvement and another shot was warranted in my opinion and I stand by that opinion still. Until someone gains a better league position Flitcroft will be the best 4th tier manager we've had since Dearden/Watkiss (because between them they got 3rd).

I know this DF topic keeps going on but it just shows how popular he was or not in some cases.but whichever side you are on.we played our best football for some years, the club was buzzing & it was a treat to go to the games.. the gates where on the rise.. there was a sense of ambition at the club & at last and a manager who bought into the club in his passion
So no matter how he failed, for me he gave me a lot of joy for a change be only for a short time.
Would I have him back.. simply No .. because it never works like that again do I wish he had have stayed yes.

The squad doesn't need strengthening its more than capable of winning football matches at this level. However I wish I had the same confidence in the manager setting them up in a formation that suits their strengths.

Great post completely agree. What a lot of people on here don't realise is that the reasons for it failing was all down to the manager and his Bertie bigbollocks attitude towards players. People can choose to believe it or not but I always judge a manager by what his players say about him when he is sacked. You have a look at how many were 'sorry' to see him go. Clue, it'll take you a while to find more than one! And I also know for a fact that JR spoke to the players before making his decision as well.

Just because we're in a mess at the moment people are romanticising about a double failure. It's like someone giving you two lottery tickets, one with 3 numbers on and one with 2 numbers. One might be slightly better than the other but it's not worth having either of them at the end of the day!
