Paul Cox??

Postby Lurker Dan 95 » Mon Oct 05, 2020 8:10 pm

Hi guys

Bit of a lurker here tbh but my old man heard off someone that we're interested in Paul Cox for manager again. Anyone else heard anything? Wouldn't seem right to me.
Although he did hear it off a spireite so he could be talking out his ass

It's not true so indeed it did come out of a Spireite ass, which to be honest, is not a great place to come from.

Greatest respect for Coxy, he got the job done with only one automatic place. Unlike all those who've followed who've flushed an astonishing amount of cash down the bog with multiple places available

Coxy appears to be doing a good job at Kettering considering where they were when he took over.
Hope he does well for them and gets them promoted, but there are some big clubs at that level with big budgets.

Obviously there’s nothing in this ‘rumour’, but when we do appoint again it needs to be somebody with a proven track record in the league.. the pattern is clear to see;

Cox - no football league experience and was found out at this level
Murray - no management experience and we never troubled the top half
Evans - finally we get somebody with a track record in and we were near the top until he buggered off with only 4 losses in 30 or something like that.
Flitcroft - again has a promotion on his CV and we are challenging near the top.
Dempster - back to no experience and it was a total disaster
Coughlan - no real experience or tangible success and it’s hardly going swimmingly.

To me it’s absolutely no coincidence that the two managers who have performed best for us out of the last 6 (EFL only) were the ones with a decent track record and a promotion already on their CV.

I do agree that experience is vital, however it's a little unfair to compare Cox and Murray to Flitcroft and Evans considering the budget difference. Cox also had to adapt to a new league and still finished in the top half in our first season back which in hindsight was a good achievement with the players at his disposal.

Actually Murray finished 12th in his only full season with his own team on (as pointed out above) a much smaller budget than Evans and Flitcroft. The latter two managers also had Murray players as the mainstay of their teams despite spending fortunes on others. If we were going to stick with any of these managers for a long term solution it should have been Murray with a bigger budget. Yes he resorted to a defensive style but with inexperienced (but talented) squad who later progressed quickly. With a bigger budget I’m sure he would have been more adventurous and less scared of falling back into the pit of misery.
Who are you calling pedantic? I resemble that remark!

Evans and Flitcroft both brought an energy & belief into the club.. ok Evans did a runner... but when we had a decent manager we sacked him ... Paul cox would never cut it at this level even with a big budget..

this is so true.

certain levels of toxicity used to travel round the ground. With Evans and DF, you could feel the new heartbeat

Completely agree. If a manager can bring genuine belief to a club/fanbase then you’re on to something and in my opinion that only really comes from having managers who have done it before (or a rookie manager gets off to an absolute flyer, none of ours have). I’d say it’s the case even more so with a club like ours, that let’s face has been starved of success in the past 18 or so years. When you’re a club that rarely do anything and then you get somebody in who has a proven track record it breathes new life in to everybody.

With managers such as Murray, Dempster, Coughlan it’s hard to have true belief that they achieve something, not in the same way that you could believe we could achieve with Evans or Flitcroft anyway. It’s hope more than anything in my opinion.
