"Mansfield Town have been League Two’s lavish spenders in recent seasons, but that has not always translated onto the pitch. Graham Coughlan is the latest man looking to lead the big-budgeted Stags into League One. The former Bristol Rovers boss, who replaced rookie John Dempster in December, looks a more demanding and imposing figure than his predecessor. Coughlan has co-operated positively though with new Director of Football, David Sharpe, who has overseen the bulk of recruitment.

Mansfield need to get things right in that department after a very disappointing 21st-placed finish last season and sure enough, a rear-guard that shipped 55 league goals in 36 games has since been addressed. Marek Štěch, a promotion-winner with Yeovil and Luton, adds experience between the sticks while athlete Rollin Menayese, the composed Farrend Rawson and dynamic wing-back Corey O’Keefe bolster the back-five, which already includes one of League Two’s most consistent left-siders in Malvind Benning. In midfield, they hope that technician George Maris will be refreshed after a stale end to his time at Cambridge and that Ollie Clarke, a trusted servant to Coughlan at Rovers, brings leadership to an otherwise youthful crop including advanced presser Harry Charsley. Pressing is key to a Coughlan side, which is why Mansfield have added mobility up top in Jamie Reid – 56 goals in 97 non-league games for Torquay – even with a good crop of strikers on paper already in place.

Promotion is the aim – a massive improvement on last season is the demand

One of the most sensible commentaries I've read.

I think 6th/7th should be our aim.

Hard working, solid and grafting performances that we will aim to win by 1 goal is how the season will pan out. I suspect it'll not always be pretty, but will be effective when we get settled.
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.

About the only preview I’ve seen who doesn’t think we still have Maynard signed on. I wonder who Gab gets his info from.....

Mansfield are not the lavish spenders this time, we’ve took a clear different approach.

We've not seen much of Jamie Reid's mobility yet and I'm not sure I would describe Farrend Rawson as composed (although I said he looked composed against Peterborough in the 1st half). I think he's more of a no nonsense boot it clear type of defender.

I think if we have a good season we might just sneak the playoffs.

We're certainly going in the right direction again.

I hope you are right Adam, but am struggling to see the evidence. We were terrible last season and have lost genuine pace and our main goal threat. Time will tell, fingers crossed I'm wrong, but I think 12th this season.

I don't want a midfield player who is a technician or a locksmith or an architect or a presser. I want a midfield player who has an impact on games and who creates and scores goals.

Thanks for the 4-4-2 tip and a decent summary Sam although a bit harsh on Andy Cook. Is he going to become a new Stags pantomime villain like Ollie Palmer? I hope not because Ollie always scores against us.

I'll put my mask on and go out and buy a copy tomorrow.

I had to choose someone and that was the best reason I could think of for choosing someone. It was written about a month ago to be fair when he was less certain to be here. Hope I don’t bump into him anywhere as he’s a big lad!

Hasn't Oli Palmer signed for Wimbledon. He's a league above us now.

I take it this was written before the fixtures came out too.

It was yes, 15th July it was submitted. So before fixtures, Palmer and a lot of the new signings.

Fair enough. I’m a regular reader so must have given mine a while ago. I’ve not received any emails from them as far as I recall.

League Two specialist Edward Walker (@Edward_W97) delivers his team-by-team verdicts ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, with a 1-24 rundown covering each club in-depth ahead of the new season.

1. Bolton (5/1)
2. Port Vale (18/1)
3. Cheltenham (16/1)
4. Tranmere (14/1)
5. Salford (13/2)

6. Mansfield (11/1)
Arguably, there was not a more underwhelming team than Mansfield in 2019-20. Having come so close to promotion in 2018-19, many expected the Stags to take the next step and be right up there come the conclusion of the campaign. They ended up not even getting close. Fans of the Nottinghamshire outfit will be hopeful that the club have learnt from the mistakes of last season. The early signs are encouraging. The Radfords have provided manager Graham Coughlan with some impressive new signings to an already decent squad.

Czech goalkeeper Marek Stech looks set to be the new number one, and in front of him are defenders and wing-backs like Ryan Sweeney, Malvind Benning, Kellan Gordon, James Clarke and Rollin Menayese, who previously worked under Coughlan at Bristol Rovers. The acquisition of former Forest Green man Farrend Rawson, who impressed at the back for FGR in 2019-20, is another impressive bit of business. The extremely versatile Corey O’Keeffe, Southampton’s Aaron O’Driscoll and Scunthorpe’s James Perch add further depth to this defensive unit.

Bristol Rovers’ Ollie Clarke and Cambridge’s George Maris join a midfield that already includes players like Willem Tomlinson and Harry Charsley. Further forwards, Torquay’s Jamie Reid and Milton Keynes Dons’ Jordan Bowery form options in a frontline that already contains Danny Rose, Nicky Maynard and the returning Andy Cook. It leaves the Stags with an impressive number of options in the centre-forward positions.

After last season’s disaster, things can only get better for Mansfield. New arrivals look promising, but as is always the case when a squad goes through an overhaul of this size, it takes time for all the new faces to integrate with one another. The ability is certainly there though, and if Coughlan can quickly find the right system for them all, the Stags should massively improve on 2019-20. Promotion is the ultimate target, but with many other squads looking strong, a top seven finish should not be seen as a disappointment by fans of the Nottinghamshire club.

7. Walsall (22/1)
8. Exeter (14/1)
9. Colchester (20/1)
10. Carlisle (40/1)
11. Forest Green (18/1)
12. Bradford (16/1)
13. Cambridge (50/1)
14. Leyton Orient (40/1)
15. Crawley (50/1)
16. Grimsby (40/1)
17. Newport (40/1)
18. Morecambe (200/1)
19. Harrogate (40/1)
20. Scunthorpe (40/1)
21. Stevenage (80/1)
22, Barrow (50/1)
23. Oldham (66/1)
24. Southend (40/1)
