Signing(s) that surprised you (in a good way)

Postby Johnny Rotten » Thu Jan 30, 2020 3:10 pm

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere.

Whilst in this latest transfer window I am involved in a conversation whereby (copied and pasted);

what have been the times when your club has signed someone only for you to have no genuine understanding of the logic behind it only for you end up with football pie all over your face?

Discuss...

Dunno about Stags, but I was surprised when Sunderland signed the seemingly over the hill Niall Quinn, only for him to form a lethal 4 year partership with Kevin Phillips.

Killer Kilcline was good for Stags when well past his sell by date.
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.

Micky Boulding. I remember he appeared at a friendly in Worksop and none of us knew who he was. Our physio at the time Barry Statham said he used to be a tennis player! So of course we weren’t expecting much. I think we got a LOT more from him than any of us could ever have imagined.

I was shocked but delighted when we managed to re-sign Matt Green from Birmingham in 2015 (very early in the transfer window)

His spell at Birmingham didn't work out due to injuries. Maybe he had still been with the Stags if it wasn't for Steve Evans who did not rate Green. Very big mistake by Steve Evans.

Steve Evans made the right decision on Green.

Although he won’t go down as a Stags great, Gary Silk was ridiculed at County (they used to chant “if Silk can play for county so can I”

So we all had low expectations when he arrived, but he turned out pretty decent, winning player of the season in his first term.

They loved him at Notts. They sang “he’s got no hair but we don’t care” to him.

Matt Piper on loan from Leicester and Duncan Mackenzie from Forest.

Along with Muzza these are probably the three most influential loan players we have had. Oh just a minute there was O'Neil Donaldson as well.

Give me a minute and I'll probably come up with a few more!!

But was he a surprise?. He came with a much bigger reputation than the other four who were all unknowns.

Silky’s a good shout.

Simeon Hodson, Gary Ford, Adam Eaton and Warren Hackett also spring to mind.
