Ian Holloway will be manager and Director of Football responsible for all football operations. John Fenty says:

"Ian Holloway (Ollie) with his vast experience intends to drive the Club forward both on and off the field, having special responsibilities as the director responsible for all football operations. He will have more freedom and autonomy to shape on-the-field matters than any other manager within the English Football League (one foot on the training ground and one in the boardroom)."

"The Board has signed off on our largest playing budget for next season at this level, although it’s fair to say there will be several bigger spenders in the division."

Alternatively we may be saying "look what we could have had". With the Radford's spending time away from England, this kind of arrangement with someone with vast football experience like IH, is maybe the model we should follow. We will know better around this time next year.

Didn’t Holloway buy a stake in the club? If so that’s a totally different proposition than “just” being an employee. It’ll be interesting what happens when it’s time for him to leave the club (which is inevitable in this industry - it’s just a matter of time).

It would depend on how much he paid for a stake in the club. I don't know how wealthy Ian Holloway is, but could be a Barry Fry type arrangement. The board set out their investment in budget (including holloway's stake) and targets and if Ian wants to go beyond the initial budget, he pays.

Could be wrong, of course, but it's a possibility.

I think he’s bought shares in the club. Iirc a figure of £100k was mentioned. I’ve obviously got no idea if this is true or not.
If it is, whilst it’s not a big number in football terms, it’s enough to make someone think twice.

They covered this on the price of football podcast last week.

He has shares, but they are worth very little in reality and also keep him as a minority shareholder so he has hardly any power either.

League 1 Finances

I note that the Watson family have now resigned as directors of Doncaster Rovers. Does this mean that Donny's playing budget will be cut? Dick Watson was the joint owner of the Keepmoat construction group and he took over as joint owner of Doncaster Rovers with his business partner, Terry Bramall, in 2006. They helped fund Doncaster's playing budget to reach The Championship on two occasions. Dick Watson died in 2017.

Terry Bramall has confirmed his long term commitment to the club but admits they are tough times. “I am obviously sad that Andrew and his family have decided to leave the board but we respect their decision. There are tough times ahead for the club, due to the current pandemic, but David Blunt [Chairman], Gavin Baldwin [CEO] and I are confident that if we can get through this difficult period that once again Doncaster Rovers will have a bright future. I remain committed to ensuring Doncaster Rovers has a long term future and one that our community can be proud of.”

Doncaster Rovers have generally been losing £2 million per year which was funded by Dick Watson and Terry Bramall. They sold Keepmoat in 2006 for around £783 million and Dick Watson received a golden handshake of £142 million.

Doncaster Rovers made a loss of £1,851,232 in 2018-2019. It looks like they budget to make a loss of between £1.5 million-£2 million most seasons. Previous profit and loss figures were as follows:

2018-2019: £1,851,232 Loss
2017-2018: £2,786,585 Loss
2016-2017 £936,282 Loss
2015-2016: £930,877 Loss
2014-2015: £1,111,995 Loss
2013-2014: £1,976,856 Loss
2012-2013: £1,916,939 Loss
2011-2012: £1,854,311 Loss
2010-2011: £1,790,209 Loss
2009-2010: £1,773,665 Loss
2008-2009: £1,746,132 Loss
2007-2008: £1,662,596 Loss
2006-2007: £1,578,025 Loss
2005-2006: £1,376,874 Loss
