So surely one of these ‘In the Know’ posters could ask the victim to see if the case has been settled or a date as to when it will be?

Having been stabbed with the offender pleading guilty, and not finding out until five weeks after he had been sentenced what his punishment was, the victim may not even know.

Jacob Mellis: Midfielder 'assured' Southend about criminal charges

Southend boss Mark Molesley says new signing Jacob Mellis "assured" the League Two club that criminal charges he faces "had been dealt with".

The 30-year-old joined the Shrimpers on Monday until the end of the season.

Mellis goes on trial next month after pleading not guilty to affray, assault and causing grievous bodily harm.

"Having spoken to the player, he assured us that was over three months ago and there was no impending court case," Molesley told BBC Essex.

The charges against Mellis relate to an incident in Mansfield in August 2019, when he played for Mansfield Town.

The midfielder was suspended by the Stags and subsequently fined two weeks' wages and warned about his future conduct.

He was initially due to go on trial in November last year, but the case was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mellis moved to Roots Hall on transfer deadline day, having scored once in 10 appearances for Gillingham in the first half of the season.

However, it has been reported the former Chelsea trainee now faces a trial beginning on 1 March.

"The news was a little bit new to us, we were aware of something in the background," Molesley added.

"We didn't feel that what he'd been sanctioned with before was not worth playing football.

"With the information we had, we felt it was a good signing for us.

"From what we have been told and the situation, we thought he was fit and available and no future problems should be coming."

Why do we keep on raking this up? Mellis will end up non league eventually with his partner in crime Donanue. They're like that waster Gary Roberts, everything needed to make it at a high level of t'game except the right attitude.

Jacob Mellis, another one in the long list of people you meet in life that say, ‘I could have hit the high notes if it wasn’t for etc etc.’ Always someone else’s fault.

20 yrs time he will be sat at the end of bar talking to the bottom of his pint. Thanks for the memories and good night.

Happens all the time, there'll be something that triggers a mental health debate amongst footballers and fans and for a day or two it's all 'lets be kinder to each other'. A week later it's back to the same slanging matches and whatnot

Jacob is not the sharpest tool in the box as demonstrated by apparently posting a picture of himself on social media taking delivery of a curry on a Friday night before a game.

I am not offering him help, nor was he asking for any. He was playing the victim card for sympathy in public. His career has been one of a downward trend, club wise based upon his own decisions.

So he will get raspberry all sympathy off of me. Another hard luck story at the end of the bar. If he was in genuine trouble and I couldhelp, I would offer to help. But not by dropping off chicken and a fishing rod in a Paul Gascgoine style.

As for roll model, in Mansfield they are called ‘cobs’.

Jacob Mellis did really well for the Stags in the nearly promotion season of 2018-2019. He was a key player. A big mistake by David Flitcroft, as pointed out also by Neal Bishop, was moving him from the attacking midfield position to accommodate Jorge Grant.
