It was the ‘friendly little nudge’ that started this embarrassing episode.

By embarrassing I meant for modern football.

There is a lot more deep seated problems and issues associated with this than just a dismissal rescinded. For me these are:

Why does the offending players team never publicly slate their player for displaying an astounding amount of shithousery?

Why don’t the FA, as they have initiative after initiative, clamp down on such behaviour by making the player take a re-education course. They can expand the remit of their Respect campaign if necessary as the player is not respecting the referee.

Why isn’t the PFA, the bastion of players rights doing something to eradicate this and educate their members to play in a sporting manner towards their fellow union members and professionals?

Why didn’t one of the rest of the Stags side get ‘a bit of revenge in’ by ensuring that the shithousery of player at least limped for a while?

More importantly why didn’t Sweeney hit the lad with all the force of an enraged Trevor Christie after knowing he had been duped?

Answers on a postcard to the FA , Wembley Stadium, London.

The FA announced the introduction of the new offence in May to deal with cases where there is "clear and overwhelming evidence to suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation, and as a direct result, the offending player's team has been awarded a penalty and/or an opposing player has been dismissed".

so do mtfc have to contact the FA or is it done automatically ?

it's nothing to do with MTFC. You'd have thought the commission would have considered it. Maybe more will come out.
They should consider it. The Sweeney / Bowman incident clearly meets the criteria. If Bowman escapes punishment than it will be an injustice.

most of the Exeter fans are defending Bowman saying he was violently elbowed in the stomach and that Sweeney will get an extra one game ban

Specsavers need to set up more shops in Exeter, they'd do a roaring trade .

It could have been so much more costly though. And where is Bowman's punishment? Time to cut this cheating cancer out of football now. It's plain embarrassing

Do you really need to use the word 'cancer' when talking about this particular subject?

It's time the FA gave this sort of cheating the 2 footed challenge!

If a player is wrongly sent off, and it's clear that the opposition conned the ref, then i'd say the offending player should receive the ban originally handed out by the ref. If you wanted to go total-hardcore then you could argue any resulting goal scored as a result is rescinded and points adjusted accordingly. That'd soon stamp it out, and all the extra appeals would soon keep the FA from ever getting bored :P
If i look in pain it's because i'm thinking

From someone who has recently recovered from Cancer i find this comment in very bad taste, especially from someone who works in the media.

Paulstag,

It is a common use of the word these days, nothing in it and not in bad taste.

Congratulations, for surviving that horrible illness, enjoy your football.

Ok cool, as long as it's common and you don't find it in bad taste we're all good and that's the end of it.

It is in common usage and this argument was had by many, and in the press and tv at time, after the release of ‘Rhythm is a Dancer’ by Snap in 1992.

1 in 4 people will experience cancer in one form or another.

There’s no point in jumping on someone for having used the word in “normal parlance” without any intention to offend cancer sufferers.

Cancer is a group of diseases and no other use is correct, so Chadman is wrong. The use of the word in any other context is simply incorrect as a player feigning injury isn’t a disease. Use the word behaviour instead.

Both my parents died, quite frankly, horrible deaths due to cancer.
When I read the sentence in question I didn't suddenly become offended or outraged.
I've also heard on the news over the years phrases like "the cancer of knife crime" etc
Why are people so quick to be offended by everything?

It’s a horrible disease.

It is also a star sign
It is also a Tropic

And the end of the day, it is just a word.

If your offended by the use of that word, in that context, the issue is with you. Not the Chad or anyone else. Congratulations on beating it, but it wasnt in bad taste.

Cancer spreads, like cheating in football has it's a fair enough usage in the context.

Dont agree with Edders though. Words arent just words, they have meaning and can cause great offense depending on the context, situation and delivery. That wasnt the case with the Chad.

The use of the word cancer is not as a metaphor alluding to something being like cancer growing and polluting. One of the actual definitions of the word is a harmful activity that spreads quickly so it was entirely appropriate to use the word.

The offence taken in America to a senator using the word niggardly included people demanding they were sacked or even jailed for using the n word in a debate. The only issue was that it had a different spelling, root and meaning but it didn't stop an online hate mob trying to oust him

I remember a group of social workers making an official complaint when one of my ex-colleagues told their teenage male client to stop being a two hat. It didn't succeed when he pointed out that the dictionary meaning of the word is a foolish or belligerent young man displaying oafish behaviour.

Boy were they red faced when it was pointed out to them and the use of the word was entirely accurate.
Who are you calling pedantic? I resemble that remark!

There is a difference between being offended by something and questioning the use of the word in a particular situation.

I personally don't think using the word 'cancer' to describe diving in football is an appropriate use of language, therefore I questioned it.

So will the ‘fan’ who called Sweeney a tool at volume so he looked up to the away support as he disappeared down the tunnel like to apologise?
