Bury owner Steve Dale has turned down a new offer for the club, believed to have been made by a former chairman.

It is understood the offer would have secured the survival of the League One outfit, who have already had five games cancelled by the EFL this season.

The ex-chairman was told Dale thinks he can secure a better deal, even though the EFL has warned Bury they risk being kicked out of the League.

As it stands, the Shakers could be expelled from the League on 23 August.

Bury staff issued a statement on 12 August which "implored" Dale to accept an offer for the club, who are yet to play a competitive fixture this season.

The club have already been given a 12-point deduction for the season after entering into a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) - which is classed as an insolvency event by the EFL - to try to clear some of their debts.

The Shakers saw a winding-up petition against them dismissed by the High Court on 31 July, while Dale claimed the EFL was "working against" them.

EFL interim chief executive Debbie Jevans later said that the League was "not standing in the way" of the club's survival.

EFL Statement: Bury Update 20/08/19

Tranmere game on 24th August has been suspended.

"Bury FC’s scheduled League One fixture with Tranmere Rovers on Saturday 24 August has been suspended as further clarity remains outstanding in relation to a number of the Club’s financial obligations.

In addition, Sheffield Wednesday have been awarded the Carabao Cup Round One tie scheduled to be played against Bury and will progress to Round Two, where they will play away at Rotherham United on Wednesday 28 August.

The EFL Board continues to be frustrated at the lack of significant progress that has been made by Mr Dale in providing the information required. However, we will continue to work with the current ownership in an attempt to achieve a resolution ahead of the Notice of Withdrawal deadline of Friday 23 August.

It remains in regular communication with Mr Dale but if a solution is not found by the deadline, the Board will authorise the necessary share transfer on behalf of Bury FC which shall be legally binding on all parties and result, regretfully, in the Club no longer being a member of the League.

Should this happen, Bury’s record from the 2019/20 season would be expunged with League One consisting of 23 Clubs for the remainder of the campaign and the number of relegation places reduced to three at the conclusion of 2019/20 season. Four promotion places would remain from League Two ensuring a full complement of 24 teams in League One in 2020/21.

Bury would then be free to make an application to the Football Association to re-join league competition further down the English football pyramid from season 2020/21.

The EFL now seem to have gone back on their previous statement of five promotion places for League 2 and reduced the number of relegation places in League 1 to three which does cause some debate previously.

It might sort out 24 teams for league one but leaves league two short by one and thus provides a knock on for each and every league below.

Yeh it does unless I’ve missed a bit about who gets promoted to league two from non league this season and how many go down to non league.

4 still go up but only 3 come down to replace them (unless further down the pyramid means league 2 for Bury which I highly doubt). Suspect only 1 will drop from League 2 then as a result.

Interesting article in the Daily Telegraph regarding a report from financial experts to the EFL in 2017 predicting financial problems for clubs.

Worrying numbers

The cost of chasing the dream
Average annual economic losses of Championship clubs promoted to the Premier League
2008-10: £35.13m
2010-13: £54.72m
2013-16: £50.35m
2016-19: £129.63m

Championship wages as % of revenue
2016-17: 99%
2017-18: 106%

Wages as % of revenue 2017-18
League One: 94% (highest ever)
League Two: 78% (highest since 2001)

A great quote from Mark Palios at Tranmere ""The EFL is for me the guardian of the pyramid in this country," he said. "It's most of the clubs in the pyramid, which is essentially a massive part of the fabric of this country. It grew out of communities, it grew out of churches and of working men's clubs, and 130 years later, it still plays a massive role. For a lot of people, it's all they have in their lives, to some extent."

That will be the case - then it will be upto the National league what to do with their 3 divisions

At last there's influential managers breaking the politically correct silence and saying exactly what most of us are thinking. I've said before that the EFL are a joke and more interested in socially aware programmes and patting themselves on the back rather than doing what is their prime mandate which is to protect the league clubs players and fans

League 1 is a total joke this season. Hope its 1 down from our league and not 2, giving County or the Direites more of a chance to get up

didn't Barton get charged for punching Barnsley's manager last season? I'm surprised he's still there

Phil Parkinson and Steve Parkin have resigned at Bolton. I'd love to see Steve Parkin back at the Stags one day. I always thought he had unfinished business at Field Mill. He did a great job despite the financial restrictions due to Hasloan.
