Yes because he was still under contract, there was just no fee paid.

Said on a previous thread Ryan's really enjoying his time here, you can see his reaction post game with the fans. He's having a real blast. Either this or go out on loan again and again and have no real affinity for a club. As I say what better way for the lad to get noticed than get promotion as part of a really mean, mean defence. He no doubt likes the way DF is as a manager, I doubt he'd have hung around with the Scottish manager in charge.

No upfront fee even with a 50% sell on is still a very good deal for Sweeney. He's been excellent.

Just need walker Ajose grant and Smith to sign now

The 50% is a really interesting move. Not seen such a high percentage but well worth the gamble it suggests.

It's testament to how we are viewed by other clubs. We are a club who are giving him game time and are progressing him. The sheer fact its a free transfer with a sell on % shows that not only are we trusted nowadays
(we COULD "sell" him to forest for £0 and buy him back for £0 meaming Stoke get diddly) but also clubs know we develop players and develop them so we'll that we've had major interest in players for high values.

Let's hope we continue this trend. We could get a reputation of being the club to go to by young talented players. Even those who perhaps need help and advice about off the field as well. DF is like a friend to these players, and they appreciate that back. My boss at work is like Evans (just a hipster and not fat and Scottish) but I work for him because I have to, I'm trying to find work elsewhere but it's tough. Under DF's style of management I'd probably run through a brick wall for him.

Where’s the 50% been mentioned in any official capacity? Not that it really matters. I would have expected a fee so any sell on is virtually irrelevant at the moment. We’ll make a profit IF he ever leaves.

Nobody has suggested it’s 50%, and I highly doubt that to be the case.

He's just saying even if there was a 50% sell on it would be a good deal. Not read about any details of the sell on, though I am sure Stoke will have insisted on one, he's only 21.

Sweeney was given his league debut by Neil Ardley, when he was managing Wimbledon. Stoke apparently signed Sweeney from them for £250k (unconfirmed) https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36985924

Looks like they don't see a future at Stoke for the lad. I feel the deal may include extras like a fee if we are promoted and a sell on fee %. Maybe a buy back clause but I doubt that.

I think this is a stunning it of business. We have just got an aspiring International player on a free transfer... Has no other team seen him play, or were just so good he only wanted to come here?

How brilliant is this?

Some of the older fans will remember Paul Matthews who was in the sides that won two promotions in the seventies.Paul's grandson who is nearly seventeen has signed for the stags on a two year deal. His name is Ethan Hill.He played in trial matches with nine league clubs but chose us.He is a central midfielder and was released by Forest. He was offered terms with Lincoln.Glad he didn't go there.

I'm surprised Jones didn't want to take a look in the summer. I've seen Stoke live this season and Ashley Williams is terrible, Shawcross is finished and Martins Indi is not interested. They've just signed Danny Batth from Wolves who is solid at that level but not spectacular.

I think he was out of contract in the Summer, so he wouldn't have had to go back at all if he didn't want to. He's probably glad to have got something sorted without having to go back.

Sounds like a good bit of business for everyone really:

- We get a young £250k worth aspiring international for nowt
- Stoke get a sell on for a guy they wouldn't get the chance to see play again, and would lose for nothing in the Summer
- Sweeney gets a contract at am ambitious club, so he doesn't have to go into the Summer as a free agent.

Ill be watching this lad closely. If ge turns out as classy a footballer as his grandfather he'll be well worth a look.

The suggestion from a Charlton supporting workmate is that, whilst Ajose is seeing his contract out with us, Charlton are due some money from us if we get promoted.

Totally agree Rob. And Paul Matthews perception and reading of a game was sublime.

Paul M was a great player. I remember him having an issue with his shoulder dislocating but he was the unsung hero of that side.
