Macca

Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but what's the story with him? I'd forgotten he was actually our player, thought he'd gone out on loan? Then read back through the reports and he had a knee injury at the end of September, side lined for 6 weeks? So should have had some news in November? Still rehabilitating?

Judging by last weeks dressing room footage he can only hop on one leg at the moment.

Fortunately, Mellis' superb form (along with Bishop) means that we aren't missing Macca at the moment. But our current form might not continue forever, so hope Macca has a speedy recovery.

Even when fit Macca will struggle to get a start.

I agree. Macca is not as important to this squad as some people may have thought a few months ago.

We also somehow need to fit the gifted Otis Khan into this team. Both are bench players at the mo - but they could be crucial come the final analysis.

Agree to a certain extent, and would include Murfin in that as well now but all good additions to come back in maybe early next year when we get injuries suspensions.

I thought Alex MacDonald played well in his nine starts (W4 D3 L2). He was one of my top rated players until his injury. The same applied to David Mirfin last year.

He’ll be like a new signing when he’s back fit, it says a lot about how good this squad is that we’ve been able to kick on without him. I think we would have struggled if he was missing last season. Personally I’d like to see him in a more advanced role than he was playing at the start of the season but he gives great energy to the team wherever he plays.

Mecca is a wide player, not a centre mid. May sit on the bench for awhile.

Mecca is a bingo place innit? ;)

Two managers thought he could play centre mid so that's good enough for me. Not sure how he would do at wing back. luckily bishop and mellis have formed a good partnership while macca has been injured

Think it will be difficult for Macca to get back straight into the team, but he will play a massive part for us this season.

Just hope he plays out wide, as that his best position, in my opinion.

DF's favourite formation is 3-5-2 so he is not going to play Alex MacDonald out wide. Louis Briscoe, Lindon Meikle and Junior Daniel all had the same problem in 2013-2014.

3-5-2 = Death to wingers or wide midfield players but great for wing backs.

Whatever formation you play there is only 11 players in the pitch at any one time.

What is a wing back other than a full back who gets forward or a winger who gets back?

I agree. There is no reason why a either a full back or a winger can't play at wing back - assuming that the full back can cross and the winger can tackle.

That is the problem, not all can effectively enough.

That's the thing. A wing-back is just as much an attacking winger as he is a full-back. It's equal parts defence and attack in this formation. Macca would be absolutely fine in that role, but we already have two outstanding wing-backs in Mal and Hayden. I think Macca will be used in the Bishop role as the season drags on and Bish's age starts to show towards the business end. Depending on who we're playing, we may even play Bish and Macca together in the centre, with Mellis or Khan just ahead. CJ might be moved to striker permanently.

Not a bad shout Paris, could CJ be the striker we’re looking for?

Personally I like him in the role just behind a lead striker (Walker or Rose?) so it’s tougher for a defence to pick up his runs.

You wouldn't have seen Stanley Matthews, Charlie Charles Charles, George Best, Jimmy McCaffrey and ehethethethetheth, ethehethethetheth, ethethetheth, Chris Waddle!, tracking back and defending as a wing back in a 3-5-2 role

Long live the winger!!
