I think we will be the first team to play them when they resume league fixtures I think. That may not be a bad thing and hopefully they will be ring rusty.
Who are you calling pedantic? I resemble that remark!

HT: Exeter City 0 Carlisle United 0
Very windy at Exeter again with Carlisle having the benefit of the wind behind them in the first half. The defences have been on top with Tom Parkes having a very good game for Exeter heading everything away at the back; and George Tanner doing a good job at right back for Carlisle stopping Joel Randall on the left. It took until the 41st minute for Randall to eventually get a dangerous cross in.

Carlisle have had the best chances with Lewis Alessandra heading George Tanner's cross from the right wide of the post and Gimi Toure shooting narrowly past the post from a Josh Kayode cross. Josh Kayode's long throws are a useful weapon for Carlisle. Exeter's best chance fell to Josh Key who blasted over the bar from the edge of the area. Centre half, Aaron Hayden has had to go off for Carlisle with a head injury.

FT: Exeter City 1 Carlisle United o
Man of the Match and Sutton lad, Tom Parkes, had an excellent game in defence for Exeter and he also scored the winning goal with a sweet left foot strike from Nicky Law's free kick from the left. Carlisle the applied some pressure with Josh Kayode bullying Exeter left back, Jack Sparkes down the right and Gimi Toure making some strong runs down the left. However the game was lost on 60 minutes when Jake Taylor, who had a good game for the Grecians, seemed to land deliberately on Toure's thigh after a tackle and then goaded Toure into responding with a head butt into Taylor's stomach/chest. Toure received a straight red. He has been one of Carlisle's best players this season but this is the second time he has been sent off. It was a silly sending off especially as Toure was causing loads of problems for Josh Key. Ryan Bowman headed wide from a Jack Sparkes cross and Randell Williams made a great run down the right beating two Carlisle defenders before laying the ball off to Nicky Law to score a second goal but Carlisle MOM, George Tanner, made a great block. Carlisle huffed and puffed with ten men and Kayode headed wide and Omari Patrick had a shot from distance but they could not grab the equaliser. Toure came on the pitch at the end to remonstrate with the ref and Carlisle manager, Chris Beech, had to usher him away.

Elvis Bwomono was the third most experienced player in Southend's starting line-up yesterday at the age of 21.

Shockingly bad defending from Jordan Turnbull (former Northampton centre half). Worse for the first goal than the second goal in my opinion.

76:24% possession in favour of Port Vale. Scunthorpe had entered Vale's area once. Ryan Loft up front for the Irons is getting frustrated and clattering into Leon Legge and Nathan Smith and is rightly yellow carded in the 27th minute. Port Vale take the free kick from the halfway line and it is caught by Scunny keeper, Mark Howard who bowls the ball out to Abu Eisa on the left who runs down the pitch, cuts inside on his right foot and smashes one into the far corner. 0-1

FT: Port Vale 0 Scunthorpe United 1

A classic smash and grab performance by Scunthorpe who had Junior Brown playing in defence along with another nine Scunthorpe players. Port Vale had 69% possession and 13 shots but only one was on target which was a tame header from Leon Legge. Port Vale could not break Scunthorpe down who were just happy to sit back and smash the ball up field to nobody if necessary (34 clearances and 8 headed clearances). Port Vale put plenty of crosses into the box but the final ball was not good enough. They also left Tom Pope on the bench and Mark Cullen was disappointing up front. David Worrall, Tom Conlon and Adam Crookes linked up well down the left and David Amoo put a few crosses in from the right. Cristian Montano, Harry McKirdy and Devante Rodney came on as subs and livened things up. Cristian Montano put in a good cross from the left but Mark Cullen scuffed it wide. Tom Conlon won a free kick on the edge of the area after good play by McKirdy but his free kick was deflected wide. McKirdy then claimed a penalty when his shot was blocked by Emmanuel Onariase. In the 92nd minute it looked like McKirdy and Conlan had scrambled an equaliser in at the far post. The Port Vale commentators said the goal had been disallowed but keeper Mark Howard had clung on to the ball on the line and the ref gave a free kick for a foul on him by Conlon.

Some Port Vale fans will be phoning up BBC Radio Stoke and demanding that John Askey be sacked like they were doing on Saturday after they had lost 4-3 to Tranmere after being 2-0 up at half time and 3-2 up in the 92nd minute. They did have Luke Joyce sent off early in the 2nd half. They had won their previous three league games but had been knocked out of the FA Cup by King's Lynn.

Scunthorpe were very very limited but lethal as they won the game with their only shot on target after a great run and shot by Abu Eisa from a quick throw out by the keeper after a Port Vale free kick. Ryan Loft looked like he was a certainty to be sent off but he did manage to shrug Nathan Smith off the ball in the 67th minute and charge into the area but his shot bounced off the far post. That was their only attack in the 2nd half as they switched from a 4-4-2 to a 5-5-0. Kevin van Veen looked knackered from the first minute and limped off injured after fouling a Vale player in the 2nd half.

Scunthorpe MOM: Emmanuel Onariase, Harrison McGahey and Abu Eisa (one piece of brilliant play)
Port Vale MOM: Tom Conlon, Manny Oyeleke and Harry McKirdy (sub)

Anybody going to watch another League 2 game this afternoon? I might go for Crawley Town v Carlisle United followed by Leyton Orient v Harrogate Town (or Newport County v Port Vale)

Crawley were excellent in the last game I watched them when they beat Tranmere Rovers 4-0 at home especially Jack Powell and Jake Hesketh (24) (on loan from Southampton) in midfield and Tom Nichols up front. Tranmere were poor and it was no surprise that Michael Jackson was sacked shortly afterwards.

Had a chuckle at this comment from a Tranmere fan after the game.
“If you actually look at the squad it stands comparison with most of the current challengers. However there is an elephant in the room. A number of that 22 are not physically up to this brutal level of football. You can get away with maybe one or two in the side but when you have two 5ft 6-7" central midfielders, the centre of defence is going to be exposed in the air and in the tackle. Add lightweights* like Khan, O’ Connor, and the great enigma, Morris and you create little as you need to win the ball first.”

* = I think this is a literal use of the term "lightweight" rather than having little impact on the game although it could be both! (See previous Stagsnet debate  )

HT: Crawley Town 0 Carlisle United 1
Carlisle United have been the best side in the first half and deserve their first half lead. Josh Kayode had a shot saved by Glenn Morris from a Nick Anderton cross from the left following a cleared corner. More good play from Carlisle then saw Kayode lay the ball off to Lewis Alessandra who blasted narrowly wide from the edge of the area. Alessandra then had another shot from the edge of the area gathered by Morris and Gimi Toure went on a good run to the touchline beating Archie Davies at right back. Carlisle took the lead in the 43rd minute when a Callum Guy free kick was cleared and eventually came to Gime Toure whose shot was pushed away by Glen Morris straight to Rhys Bennett whose first shot was blocked again by Morris but Bennett then followed up again to tap it in. Crawley's best effort come from a Tom Nichols header from a Ashley Nadesan cross.

Carlisle are one of the better teams I have watched this season and have plenty of height in their team. Gime Toure is a dangerous player up front. I also quite like their manager Chris Beech who seems a very honest and straight forward guy. The Carlisle commentators are saying that they have not seen a team who are better than Carlisle this season but some Carlisle fans are saying that Cambridge were a better side. I have not watched Cambridge yet.
