Smallest Stags following ever on the road?

Postby mapp stag » Thu Apr 12, 2018 7:53 pm

As a Stags fan who lived in London until 1986 and intermittently in '90s I stood on many sparsely populated away terraces watching Stags in the South East yesteryear. Not sure the emptiest terrace but two memories from this era stand out:

# A midweek match at Brighton in 1992/3 when London Stags/Stags Outside Notts arrived at 12 noon for an evening kick off. Curried up and with a skin-full of Sussex ale we sang for 90 minutes despite losing 1-3. The noise from the away end was picked up by The Chad who reported that "there was an incredible atmosphere from the vociferous Mansfield support". To those that weren't there I am sorry to report that it was just 5-6 of us giving it the big one

# Another midweek match, this time a 0-0 at Aldershot in 1984/5. There were so few in the away pen that you could count them. Alas I didn't. The funny thing that night was that I got a police escort to the ground - alone!

Tuesday November 23rd 2004 went to Colchester for FA Cup replay. Match report states 95 Stags fans, but I remember that I was given a free ticket by Richard Parkes as so few had travelled that there were plenty of complimentary tickets floating about. I am sure I have seen fewer away fans before or since but that game stood out for me. Lost 4-1 not long into Cartoon Palmers reign.

I was at both of those games. I think for the Aldershot game I was with the Stags fans in the stand so if you were just counting the ones on the terrace (even though you didn't!), you didn't get them all

note that the smallest Stags away following since away followings were officially recorded (around 2002), was 44 at York in the Setanta Shield on 04/11/2008

1997ish, I was living and working in Pontardawe, Swansea. Went to the Vetch on a Tuesday night to see the Stags win 1-0, can't have been more than a couple of dozen there.

Was not the most popular person in my local pub that week... :D

We went to that one, October 1997, and we counted 35 on an away terrace with an official capacity of 3500 - 1% full !!

April 1987 (I think) - stinking wet night at Feethams to watch Stags lose to Darlington . My memory is of a hoofed ball bouncing over an advancing Kevin Hitchcock and into an open net but it was over 30 years ago!

Not Stags fans but I remember being a ballboy on the Quarry Lane terrace in either 1983 or 1984 when we played Torquay. Think it ended 0-0.

The Quarry Lane terrace was the away end and I was the only person stood on it.

1985/1986 season, Exeter City 0 - 1 Mansfield Town, I seem to remember only a handful of Stags fans at that game.

Early 90s LDV cup or whatever it was called then at Northampton..a handful of Stag fans..I cant even remember the score..I think we won!
Also a few years later going to Maine Rd in the same competion..Smallest ever recorded attendance for a competitive game at Man City ground.

41 at Carlisle in the EFL Trophy last season. Have checked the Match Centre. Smallest Stags away following in League Two since FL return is 65 at Newport for a midweek game in March 2015. Smallest away following at Mansfield since FL return is 58 from Accrington who watched the epic 4-4 draw on Valentine's Day last year.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

41 at Carlisle in the EFL Trophy last season. Need to check properly. Smallest Stags away following in League Two since FL return is 57 or so at Newport for a midweek game in March 2015.

thanks Svante, you are right as usual

That 41 at Carlisle is interesting. I did a head count that evening and only counted 31 plus 10 stewards.
Can we play Accrington Stanley every week.

9 84/85 Tranmere rovers Friday night and 0-0!
Also same season 11 Hull city away FRT 2-2 and Calderwood scored an o.g from 20 yards.
Went in a car with Chris Taylor to both. Strange to say but happy times

I remember going to Tow Law Town in the 60's when it was abandoned at half time. Less than a bus load of us and probably even less for the rearranged game in midweek. Pleased I didn't go to the second game as we lost 5-1.
