Would Liverpool or Everton ditch "You'll Never Walk Alone" or "Z Cars" because they are not upbeat enough?

Don't mess with the history and tradition of the club. On The Ball is unique to the Stags.

Assuming that we are keeping On the Ball, but replacing that awful Elvis and 'something good' song, my choices would be:-

1) Rocky theme tune
2) Star Wars theme tune
3) Fanfare for the Common Man

..... Rocky would be fun!

I almost forgot - the James Bond theme! ...... How about a bit of this to build up some tension: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9FzgsF2T-s

Clarification from Carolyn.

They’re talking about the Feeling Fine evidently.

James Bond. Definitely! Just listen to this version! .... Tell me that this wouldn't build up the atmosphere (especially at 0.35 when it all kicks in).
Seriously - just give it a listen ......... goosebumps at 0.35!

Good. Paint It Black would be my suggestion, great intro to the tune. I'm afraid as previously discussed, my music knowledge post the millennium is at best patchy.

My memory might be patchy but I started going in 1975 and it was played then but I don't remember it being played for years and years around the mid 80s well into the 2000's. So did we ditch it first time around anyway and did anyone complain. Ditching it second time around would be easier surely. Anyone know how many seasons it has been played in our history and dates?

If we are just talking about the Herman's Hermits song then just replace "Stevie" with "David" or "Flicker". Do not drop a decent chant just because Steve Evans has left. That's giving him far too much respect.

I complained, they ditched for a rubbish Elton John song which was then replaced by a succession of horrendous tunes. When the ground was redeveloped I managed to find a copy of On the Ball and Alan started playing it again - hard to believe that is almost 20 years ago now.

I believe it was played not long after the 66 World Cup through to about 1985, then back again in 2000. I am not sure if it was ever played between 1985-2000.
