Original Mansfield anthem

Postby Shev » Tue Mar 21, 2017 8:31 pm

Hello all,
Based on a song I did for Wycombe Wanderers, there is some interest from Mansfield in hearing an attempt at an original Mansfield song. My style of songwriting is rather folky, so there are no guarantees my efforts would necessarily pass muster with my contact there, but I am going to give it a good try. I am not a Mansfield supporter (I actually live in Las Vegas, though I grew up in Hertfordshire), so I was hoping you could give me your perspectives on what should be in an original Mansfield song? There are always elements to a club that only the fans themselves are aware of. Obviously I won't put every little suggestion in there, but it would definitely help to find out what aspects of the club are the most important to you all.

Cheers in advance!

We are in Sherwood Forest so mentions of Robin Hood, Maid Marion, and his Merrye Men. We also used to have "Mansfield Brewery" which was famous throughout the UK. Our biggest rivals are Chesterfield who we call "The Sheep".

Therefore I'd suggest a song about Robin Hood getting blind drunk with his friends, having his wicked way with Maid Marion, and eating a kebab.

The colours yellow and blue, or amber if it fits better. Although we do have a fair few versions in this area.

We don't have a reputation as the most positive thinking fans, but we are a passionate bunch.

We were the first club to use a "winter" yellow ball

Our owner uses his helicopter to fetch a takeaway

Our nickname is "the stags"

We're partial to a day out in Nottingham when we play our "older neighbours"

Our announcer (Alan) has been "announcing" since 1746

No one really likes us (including our "local media")

But we don't care, we're Mansfield fans

Anything involving voluntary wrist-slashing, whilst sulking in to a cracked old mirror, would fit perfectly.

You might get away with using some self deprecating humour, either that or we're all manic depressants on here. On second thoughts it could be the latter...

Thank you all for your responses, from the serious to the facetious (I think the balance is rather to the latter). I think I have figured it out, so I will be moving forward with what I have.

Thanks!

Do you have a link to the song you wrote for Wycombe?

We won the Freight Rover football league trophy in 1987 at Wembley, beating Bristol City on penalties.

We used to be known as the Egg and Milk side. http://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/artic ... 38999.aspx

First competitive game played under floodlights at field mill didnt involve the stags though.

"It wasn’t until 1930 that the first competitive game in Britain was played out under lights. The venue was Field Mill in Mansfield where on 22nd February 1930 Ollerton Forest met Welbeck Athletic in the North Notts Senior Cup Final. But it wasn’t until the fifties when the FA lifted it’s ban on the use of floodlights during competitive games that floodlit football really took off."

you don't need to leave Stagsnet to read about the first competitive match to be played under artificial light in this country:

George Foster was the last ever captain to climb the original steps to the presentation box to recieve the FRT in 87. The steps were changed after.

Tyrone Thompson scored the best OG ever, any striker would've been proud of such a finish. Can't do the linky stuff from t'Wii but it's in Youtube somewhere.

I'm sorry, that is a fine finish, but I still have to give the title of greatest own goal to Chris Brass, who earned it the hard way...
