Stags strengthen squad with new signing

We are delighted to announce the loan signing of Fleetwood Town right wing-back Gethin Jones until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old is a product of the Everton academy, helping the Toffees to win the under-18 Premier League in 2014, before signing a professional contract with the club.

The right wing-back made his professional debut for Everton in 2014, coming on as a substitute in a UEFA Europa League clash against FC Krasnodar.

In March 2015, Jones was loaned to League Two side Plymouth Argyle for the remainder of the season, making six appearances as the Pilgrims reached the play-offs.

On 18 January 2017, he joined Championship side Barnsley until the end of the 2016-17 season, making 17 league appearances during that spell.

Almost a year on, Jones signed for League One side Fleetwood Town in January 2018, making his first start for the Cod Army in an FA Cup third round replay against Premier League outfit Leicester City.

Born in Perth, Jones is eligible to play for either Australia or Wales. Jones has made appearances for the Welsh under-17, under-19 and under-21 sides, the latter of which he served as captain.

“This is a perfect place for me to get game time,” said Gethin.

“I’ve seen how well Mansfield are doing and was made up when Fleetwood told me that they wanted to take me on loan.

“I haven’t played as many games as I would have wanted [this season], so the plan was always to go on loan this January. As soon as Mansfield were interested in me I couldn’t say no.

“I want to get as many games as possible and help the team in their ambitions of promotion to League One.”

Stags switch a ‘perfect opportunity’ - new defender
mansfieldtown.net, Monday 28 January 2019

Stags’ new right wing-back Gethin Jones says he was ‘made up’ to hear that Mansfield were interested in him, labelling his switch to Nottinghamshire as a ‘perfect opportunity.’

We announced earlier today that the 23-year-old has joined the amber and blue on loan from Fleetwood Town until the end of the season.

Jones explained that he ‘couldn’t say no’ to the opportunity of joining the high-flying Stags.

“As soon as I got told by Fleetwood and my agent that Mansfield wanted to sign me, I was made up,” he said, speaking in his first interview as a Mansfield player. “I’d seen how well they’ve been doing lately and I think it’s a perfect place to get game time, get experience and hopefully get Mansfield up.

“In pre-season I did very well and I got a few games at the start of the season for Fleetwood. I haven’t played as many games as I wanted to, so it was always the plan from the start of December that I wanted to go on loan in January.

“There were a few clubs sniffing for me, but when I saw that Mansfield were interested, I couldn’t say no to that.

“I know the players that are here - there are big players that have come here from a higher level than Fleetwood to progress Mansfield.

“I just wanted to come and play football. I’ve seen them [Stags] doing well because I have a few mates at other clubs in League Two, so I look out [for them] and obviously have seen how well Mansfield have been doing.

“It’s a big positive for me to see that the manager wants to bring me in, and it will help me to get game time.

“It’s perfect for me because I’ll be playing for something every game now. It was something that me and my agent spoke about. It’s a perfect opportunity.

“[I want to achieve] what me, my agent and the manager, along with the whole club [want to achieve] and get promotion. I want to get as many games under my belt as possible and get the team up to League One.”

The defender enjoyed his first training session with his new team-mates this morning, and was impressed by the quality on show from the Mansfield charges.

He also listed the qualities that the Stags’ faithful can expect to see from him on the pitch.

“All the lads are very welcoming,” he added. “It was a really good [training] session preparing for tomorrow night’s game against Forest Green.

“It will be a tough game, but [from] what I’ve seen on the training ground there, we’re capable of beating anyone.

“I like to attack as a full-back, get out wide and get crosses into the box. Obviously I’ll do my defensive duties that I have to do. I like to get up and down the pitch as much as I can.”

Jones already boasts experience in this division, having played for Plymouth Argyle during a brief loan spell in 2015.

He explained that he was utilised as a central midfielder during that time, yet reaffirmed that his favoured position is at right wing-back.

“That [spell with Plymouth] was a good experience because we got into the play-offs. I played in different positions because at that stage I was playing more as a centre-midfielder.

“That was a good experience and I know a bit about the league as I probably played around ten games then.

“Since Plymouth, I’ve become a natural right wing-back and went on loan to Barnsley in the Championship as a right wing-back.

“Through the Everton ranks I played as a right-back and it was the same with Fleetwood. I’m really enjoying it and I want to show the fans what I can do.”

Mansfield this week also brought in right wing back Gethin Jones on loan from Fleetwood as cover for broken leg victim Hayden White.

“With the Hayden White injury, it does floor you,” said David Flitcroft. “So we had to find someone who’s been taught as a full-back. “Gethin is an adventurous defender who plays with ambition and aggression. He nearly scored early doors when he’d just come on last night but tangled accidentally with the goalkeeper.

“He’s someone that we’ve looked at for quite a while. “He suits what we’re trying to do here, either as a wing-back or a full-back. We can change the shape when we want to with him.”

Fleetwood Town can announce that defender Gethin Jones has joined Sky Bet League Two side Mansfield Town on loan until the end of the season.

Jones has seen his first team opportunities limited this season, making just three starts in the league for the Cod Army.

Everyone at the club would like to wish Gethin all the best whilst on loan at the One Call Stadium.

Fleetwood Town defender Gethin Jones joins Mansfield Town on-loan Gethin Jones

Fleetwood Town defender Gethin Jones has joined League Two side Mansfield Town on loan until the end of the season. Jones, 23, joined Fleetwood from Premier League side Everton last January. He failed to cement a regular starting spot under Uwe Rosler and John Sheridan last term due to Lewie Coyle's form at right-back.

This season he has also found game-time limited under new head coach Joey Barton. The full-back's last game for Town was the 3-1 Checkatrade Trophy defeat at Bury in November. He was brought off at half-time in that game and has not featured for Barton's first team since.

Jones has spent time training with Town's U18 side during that absence but now has made the switch to Mansfield.
