English Football League - Sky Bet League Two

Mansfield Town lost at home to lowly Yeovil Town this afternoon, Mansfield’s second defeat in succession after just one defeat in the first 24 games of the season. Yeovil arrived at the One Call Stadium without a win in their previous 10 games but played well here, causing Mansfield problems with pace on the break, pressing the Stags, and then defending resolutely in the second half. The Stags were lacking quality going forward in a disappointing performance. Jordan Green scored Yeovil’s goal, firing under Mansfield’s debutant goalkeeper Jordan Smith on 19 minutes, having controlled the ball really well from a fine crossfield pass. Mansfield’s best chance was a powerful shot from Danny Rose somehow blocked on the line by keeper Nathan Baxter on 74 minutes, and there were several near misses, but Yeovil deserved their victory. For the second week running, the Stags had a player sent off, this time Matt Preston, for two yellow cards, firstly pulling Zoko back, and then a late challenge in the last minute. A bad day for Mansfield, and today’s game emphasised that Mansfield are in desperate need of a further central defender and another striker. The Stags will be looking to bounce back at home to Crawley on Tuesday, when Neal Bishop will be available again after suspension.

Mansfield made three changes from the side that lost at Carlisle. Goalkeeper Jordan Smith, signed on Thursday on loan from Nottingham Forest until the end of the season, replaced Conrad Logan. We were surprised by the change as Logan has performed well since Bobby Olejnik’s injury, and in our opinion not been responsible for any goals conceded in that time. Neal Bishop was suspended for one game after his sending off at Carlisle. In came Will Atkinson into central midfield. Finally Otis Khan came in for a rare start since his injury, to play against his former club, and replaced Timi Elsnik. Alistair Smith came into the 18 on the bench in place of Bishop. It was a young bench with Jordan Graham, Alistair Smith and Jason Law on it.

Yeovil had gone 10 games without a win. Under pressure manager Darren Way made four changes from their last game, including bringing in new loan signings Josh Grant from Chelsea and Alex Dobre from Bournemouth. Grant is Chelsea’s U21 captain and I saw him play against Peterborough in the Checkatrade Trophy on Wednesday. Former Stags strikers Alex Fisher and Yoann Arquin were on the bench. Fisher was to come on late in the game.

REPORT: Mansfield Town 0-1 Yeovil Town - Stags frustrated by League Two strugglers
chad.co.uk, by JOHN LOMAS, Saturday 12 January 2019

Mansfield Town suffered a disappointing 1-0 home defeat by struggling Yeovil Town this afternoon. They also ended a frustrating game with 10 men as Matt Preston was sent off for a second bookable offence on 90 minutes. A strong wind did not help the game as a spectacle, but Stags were never allowed to get into top gear by a dogged Glovers side that worked hard to close Mansfield down and spoiled at every opportunity. It was their first win in 11 games while, for Mansfield, it was a second defeat in a row after seeing that glittering 17-game unbeaten run ended last weekend. Yeovil keeper Nathan Baxter was man of the match with some vital saves including a breathtaking stop to foil Danny Rose in a second half in which Tyler Walker also had a header ruled out for offside.

Nottingham Forest loanee goalkeeper Jordan Smith was given an immediate debut, replacing Conrad Logan. Otis Khan came in against his old club in place of the suspended Neal Bishop while Will Atkinson was also given a start in midfield with Timi Elsnik dropping to the bench. Pearce’s foul on Zoko right on the edge of the box on three minutes gave Yeovil an early chance, but James was fractionally too high with his free kick. Stags had a let-off on nine minutes as Green went down in a collision with keeper Smith after Pearce had failed to deal with a high ball in the wind, but the referee decided it wasn’t a penalty. Stags finally carved out a chance on 18 minutes as Warren failed to cut out Benning’s forward ball which saw Hamilton skip away into the left of the box and force Baxter to save, Benning sending his follow-up high over the bar. Yeovil immediately made them pay as they snatched a shock lead on 19 minutes. Dickenson launched a long ball forward on the wind and it split the home defence as Green ran through and stroked home low under Smith. On 26 minutes Walker warmed Baxter’s hands at the near post from a Mellis pass, the keeper turning the shot round for a corner.

Mellis then let fly from 30 yards on 32 minutes, forcing Baxter to tip over. A minute from the break Gafaiti slid in to a perfectly timed tackle on Hamilton before he could break clear on goal. In stoppage time Sweeney was booked for hauling down the lively Green. James then forced Smith into a save to his right from the free kick. Stags made an attacking change for the second half as striker Rose replaced midfielder Khan. Yeovil survived an early scramble as they struggled to clear a Mellis free kick, but the ball eventually dropped harmlessly wide off the head of Sweeney. Preston was booked for bringing down Zoko after he had tricked his way past him on 56 minutes. The free kick was launched into the box where Green forced a smart save from Smith. Gray curled the ball back in and it came back off the bar. Desperate Stags then threw on more firepower with Graham replacing White. As they pressed, Mansfield were almost caught out on a break, but Dobre’s final shot was poor and well wide. More home pressure ended with blocks on shots by subs Elsnik and Graham. Elsnik got another shot away at Baxter though was clearly being held back as the visitors continued to get away with their spoiling tactics without punishment which had the home fans voicing their thoughts on the officiating. Baxter pulled off a world class save to beat away a ferocious Rose shot on 72 minutes. Seconds later Walker headed home only to see an offside flag raised, then Graham scuffed a decent chance wide. At the other end Zoko mis-kicked at the vital moment on another Yeovil break as a thrilling game swung from end to end. Zoko was booked for deliberate handball as we entered the last 11 minutes and a minute later Walker saw Baxter again save well from his angled shot from Graham’s pass. In the 90th minute Preston went into a very strong tackle which the referee decided was bookable and he was sent off, having already seen one yellow card earlier.

REPORT - Mansfield Town 0-1 Yeovil Town
Town claim all three points in Mansfield

https://www.ytfc.net/news/2019/january/report--mansfield-town-0-1-yeovil-town/

The Glovers claimed a much needed three points by upsetting promotion chasing Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium.

Jordan Green opened the scoring in the nineteenth minute which proved to be the only goal of the game.

Jake Gray struck the woodwork in the second half and Tyler Walker had a goal chalked off for offside just after Nathan Baxter produced a wonder save to deny Danny Rose.

Just a minute into stoppage time Matt Preston received a red card which made the task of getting back into the game an impossibility as Town ended their winless run.

Making four changes for the trip to Nottinghamshire, Town's newest recruits were handed their debuts after arriving on Friday.

Josh Grant slotted in at right-back whilst Alex Dobre started on the left wing as Darren Way opted for a 4-3-3 formation.

Elsewhere, Tom James moved into a holding midfield position where he was joined by the recalled Gray, as Adel Gafaiti replaced Bevis Mugabi in the heart of defence.

On a cold and windy afternoon in Nottinghamshire, the first sight of goal fell the Glovers way after Francois Zoko was brought down on the edge of the area.

Tom James lined up closer in than he usually does and hit the free kick over the bar.

In an energetic start for the visitors, Town were winning the ball well in the middle and limiting options for the hosts much to the frustration of the home fans.

The Stags were then lucky not to concede a penalty only eight minutes in. Green chested the ball past Jordan Smith who got no ball but brought down the Town man, referee Carl Boyeson was not convinced and Smith restarted with a goal-kick.

Having been contained for the opening exchanges the hosts had their first chance of the match. Released down the left CJ Hamilton cut in from the left and from a narrow angle was denied by Baxter.

Instantly afterwards Town took the lead through Green when Carl Dickinson’s long ball forward found the winger who controlled well and expertly slotted underneath Smith.

Baxter was then called into action to deny an equaliser, Walker was fed in on the right and the young stopper dived to save the shot at his near post as his superb solo performance continued.

Searching for a way back into the game Mellis lined up a shot from range which Baxter tipped over the bar.

As half time approached Town dug in to keep the lead at the half, a fantastic last-ditch challenge from Adel Gafaiti on Hamilton denied the forward a free run in at goal.

Well into the two minutes of additional time James struck a free kick from 25 yards which Smith saved low to his left and the resulting corner proved to be the last action of the half.

Rose replaced Khan at half time as the Stags looked for an equaliser, and they almost found one five minutes into the second half.

Mal Benning’s free-kick was headed across goal by Preston but James was there to head away from goal and the ball eventually went safely behind.

With the home side applying constant pressure, Town enjoyed a flourish of their own after Zoko was fouled by Preston just inside the Glovers half.

The free-kick fell to Green in the area whose shot at goal was well saved by Smith, the rebound made its way to Gray who struck the woodwork before Sessi D’Almeida’s half volley was deflected wide.

Looking dangerous on the counter Town still had to defend resolutely to deny an equaliser with Gary Warren and Gafaiti throwing themselves in front of every shot and cross.

With their backs firmly against the wall, Baxter produced an incredible save to keep out Danny Rose's shot on the line as the ball pinged around in the area to keep the lead for Town.

Mansfield did manage to get the ball into the net through Walker but he was flagged offside and Baxter’s goal remained unscathed.

At the other end the green and whites almost doubled their lead, Green jinked his way into the area and his shot at goal was palmed away by Smith and Zoko lost his footing as he tried to steer the effort goalwards.

Looking determined not to be beaten Baxter denied Walker, diving to his right to palm away the shot at goal which he later gathered.

To add to the hosts misery Preston was shown a second yellow card for a bad challenge on James as the game entered the first of six minutes of stoppage time.

Mansfield couldn't manage to magic up an equaliser in the remaining minutes as all three points travelled with Town back to Somerset.
