Brentford manager Wally Downes was incensed by Referee Hegley's decision to send Rowan Vine off, the second booking for “an aggressive attitude”.

He said: “You might as well book every one of my players every time they go out, as I tell them to have an aggressive attitude. It's an aggressive game, a man's game, a contact sport”.

Commenting on the last minute melee: “There's a foul, Viney tries to get the ball and it is a foul but not a booking. Then a guy comes in two-foots him, poleaxes him, and another guy, as the fella goes through, he catches on the head with his studs. Viney gets up, but he does nothing. He literally does nothing. The fact he was involved in it I think is what swayed the referee”.

“You can't just pick one out for an aggressive attitude cos there's a lot more of them coming over with far more aggressive attitudes than Rowan had”.

Brentford's win was a timely three points to stop any potential Christmas rot.

He joked: “I would have loved us to play well and knock the ball about. I wanted us too perform well but I said I wanted a new car for Christmas and I didn't get one of them either! If you don't play well you've just got to take the three points”.
