Our team were 1-0 down after just 22 seconds at Highbury, but fought back and were just moments away from earning a deserved point, when Fleetwood snatched maximum points deep into injury time.

“To say I am unhappy is an understatement,” said Cox.

“We’ve come away from home and scored four goals, the last of them two minutes from the final whistle, but still ended up losing the game.

“You can’t defend like we did and hope to win a football match. It’s not rocket science.

“So close to the end, to give away a goal from some bad decision-making was atrocious. I am gutted for the supporters.”

Our boss continued: “There were some absolutely fantastic individual performances out there today.

“Chris Clements was outstanding, Godfrey Poku covered every blade of grass, Ross Dyer looked really good, Ollie Palmer led the line well and Junior Daniel was again excellent.

“I know I have a nucleus of really good players, but I can’t legislate for stupid defensive errors that cost us like that.”

“We were away to a team that has been in the top three of this division all season. We knew they were good going forward, but we caused them a lot of problems.

“We played some good stuff and scored some good goals, but we have got a soft underbelly and it is my job to cure that.

“The time for pats on the back and applauding people is over. We have to get down to business.”

Angry Mansfield Town boss Paul Cox vowed to make big decisions and sort out his side’s defensive failures after they lost an amazing nine-goal shoot-out 5-4 in stoppage time at title hopefuls Fleetwood Town today.

The game was a thriller for the crowd, but Cox snapped; “I hated every minute of it. I don’t like losing and I won’t put up with it.

“The buck stops with me and I am going to do something about it. It will be internal. It is my job to put it right.

“I know more or less what it is. I may need a bit of help, but I do have players champing at the bit.

Dyer reflects on Fleetwood defeat
mansfieldtown.net

Striker Ross Dyer has expressed his disappointment following our gut-wrenching 5-4 defeat at Fleetwood Town this afternoon.

Dyer, who only returned to the club earlier this week following a loan spell at Hereford United, looked to have earned us a deserved point when he bagged his first goal in the Football League in the final minute of normal time.

But Antoni Sarcevic’s last-gasp spot-kick in the sixth minute of injury time, gave the Cod Army all three points on their own patch.

Despite the defeat, which sees us slip to 16th position in the Sky Bet League Two table, Dyer believes there are many positives that our side can take from the game.

“We’re disappointed at the moment,” said the striker. “There won’t be many teams that come here and score four goals.

“Obviously there are a lot of positives to take, but we need to tighten things up at the back. We’re not going to win many games conceding five goals.

“We have shown quality to score four goals, although we are all obviously disappointed with the result. Hopefully, we can kick on now.

“When you are on one of these runs, [good luck] doesn’t seem to go for you, so we just seem to need some more [good] luck again.”

Meanwhile, Dyer was happy to be back in our squad this afternoon and was delighted to score his first Football League goal, as he now bids for a place in Paul Cox’s starting 11.

He added: “It has been a long road back for me from injury.

“I’ve gone out on loan, scored some goals, came back and now I feel fresh. The gaffer has thrown me on today and we did really well to get back into the game.

“However, it’s a hard pill to swallow really, to concede a goal late on when we have done so well to score four goals away from home.

“I’ve always wanted to play in the Football League, so hopefully now I’ll get my chance. I think I’ve hit a good vein of form, so hopefully I can go on and score a few more.”

Mixed emotions for Dyer

Stags striker Ross Dyer, who missed the whole of last season with a serious knee injury, had mixed feelings after bagging his first goal in the Football League but ending up on the wrong end of a 5-4 scoreline at Fleetwood Town.

Dyer came on as sub and notched a close range finish on 89 minutes which tied up the game at 4-4 and looked to have stolen an unlikely point until the Cod Army won it with a stoppage time penalty kick.

“Personally I was delighted obviously,” said Dyer. “It’s been a long road back for me from injury last season, then starting this season before ending up in the stands.

“I have been out on loan, scored goals and feel fresh.

“The gaffer threw me in and I thought we did well coming back. So to concede so late on was a hard pill to swallow.

“There won’t be many teams come here and score that many goals. We have just got to tighten up at the back.”

Dyer added: “I have always wanted to score in the Football League. I hope now I can get into the starting XI and score us a few more.

“It was one of those rare, scrappy goals and one of the easiest I will ever score. Sam Clucas had struck the ball well, the right back blocked it on the line and I just got round the backside of him and stuck it in the net.”

Dyer was not the only player returning yesterday with midfielder Chris Clements taking man of the match with a fine showing after a bad knee injury.

Dyer said: “I was delighted for Chris. He injured his knee and I can appreciate what he went through. He was unbelievable today, though he tired towards the end.”

Alexander: We got out of jail
http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/9039295/alexander-we-got-out-of-jail?

Fleetwood boss Graham Alexander admitted his side had got out of jail after watching them beat Mansfield 5-4.

An injury time penalty from Antoni Sarcevic sealed the Fleetwood midfielder's first Football League hat-trick and the most dramatic of victories, coming after Mansfield had clawed back a two-goal deficit to make it 4-4.

Alexander, who also saw Gareth Evans grab a double, said: "At the end of the day it's about winning matches but we have to be honest and say defensively we weren't good enough. We've got away with it.

"The lads have got themselves off. To twice throw the game away, first and second half, was tough but they never stopped.

"It was two teams going at it with both barrels attacking wise but there'll be two managers asking questions about the way their sides have defended.

"I stayed in my seat for the fifth goal because I didn't know if there'd be another equaliser in the 10 seconds remaining.

"I didn't want to celebrate."
