Full-time Matt Rhead will only get better at Mansfield Town

MATT Rhead has quit his job to go full-time with Mansfield Town – and boss Paul Cox warned opposition defenders to beware.

The 28-year-old worked with Cox during their time at Eastwood together, with the burly striker making a big impact.

Cox finally enticed him to the One Call Stadium, signing him from Corby, earlier this year and he quickly became a favourite among the fans as the Stags reached the play-offs.

But he was allowed to continue working at JCB, where he was a team leader, when he joined back in January and he played the rest of the campaign on a part-time basis.

Now, after penning a one-year deal, he has handed in his notice and returned as a full-time professional.

And he is set to play a part in Mansfield's first pre-season friendly, at Leamington FC today.

Cox said he will only get better, as he trains with his team-mates on a daily basis, after netting twice in two starts and 13 substitute appearances last time out.

Cox said: "It is a massive decision for him but people only saw a small percentage of him last season.

"He did not get as much game time as he should have done last season but you ask opposing centre halves and they do not like playing against him.

"Rheady is one of the best out there at what he does. I really wish I had signed him in pre-season last year when I first came here. I should have gone with my sixth sense.

"He will only get better being full-time. People just think he is a big barn door thug but he is not.

"He has as good a touch as some of the purist footballers at the club. It is because he can do the rough, horrible stuff as well and he can score goals. When on his game, he is unplayable.

"You talk to people who come up against him and they do not like it."
