FULL TIME FROM FIELD MILL

MANSFIELD TOWN 1 (Mulligan 90)
BARNSLEY 2 (Oldham 50, Williams 81)

SECOND half goals by Adam Oldham and Robbie Williams gave the Reds a hard fought victory in the FA Youth Cup at Field Mill this evening and sent Mark Smith's side into Round Three.

The game almost got off to the perfect start for Mark Smith's side when Robbie Williams glanced Nicky Wroe's free kick inches wide of the target with just three minutes on the clock.

Tom Baker went close on 17 minutes after a neat turn on the edge of the area before Mark Carter tested Marc Shackleton with a well-struck free kick from all of 35 yards.

Mansfield's physical presence all over the pitch caused the Reds no end of problems throughout and the Stags should have been in front on the half hour mark when livewire winger Dean Hankey capitalised on a slip by Tom Harban to run in on goal. It took an excellent block by Ryan Laight to deny the youngster.

Barnsley had a decent shout for a penalty turned down on 32 minutes when the lumbering Jake Buxton tripped Baker in the area but the referee waved away the striker's appeals.

The opening goal came just five minutes after the restart when Tonge's deep corner was knocked back into the area by Baker and Oldham celebrated his England call up by smashing the ball into the top corner from 12-yards.

Lance Mulligan and Hankey had half chances for Mansfield before Nicky Wroe should have sealed the game for the Reds with ten minutes remaining. The midfielder raced clear onto Baker's neat through ball but a wonderful save by James Coates prevented him finding the back of the net.

The Reds put the tie beyond doubt from the resulting corner as Williams was allowed time and space to power Tonge's pinpoint cross past Coates to send Mark Smith's side into the next round.

Mansfield did pull a goal back in stoppage time when Mulligan capitalised on some slack defending to prod the ball home but the Reds managed to hold on for the win.
