Loan spells at Fleetwood and Bradford ensued, before signing permanently for the Bantams in January this year.

After penning his new deal, Jon told http://www.mansfieldtown.net: "I'm delighted to have signed. I came and met the manager and was pleased to hear about his ambitions for the club.

"As a midfielder, I can get box to box or act as the 'sitting player.' I like to get 'a foot in' and work hard for the team and be an important cog in the side

PAUL Cox today declared himself thrilled with his central midfield options after swooping for the experienced Jon Worthington.

The 28-year-old has signed a one-year deal at Field Mill to become the manager's seventh signing of the summer.

The former Huddersfield Town and Bradford City has clocked up more than 250 Football League appearances in his career.

And with Adam Murray, Lee Stevenson, Paul Bolland and Anthony Howell also in place, it means Cox has plenty to choose from in the middle of the park.

"Jon is an excellent signing for us with a wealth of experience and who has played at a good level," he said.

"I said I want to have a squad that can do a job in all the different conditions you encounter and in midfield now, we have a bit of everything."

Dewsbury-born Worthington spent a spell in the Blue Square Bet Premier last season on loan with Fleetwood while at Oldham.

He also played against the Stags for Huddersfield in the Division Three play-off final of 2003-04 at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, which the Terriers won on penalties.

Worthington said: "I'm delighted to have signed. I came and met the manager and was pleased to hear his ambitions for the club.

"As a midfielder, I can get box-to-box or act as a sitting player. I like to get a foot in and work hard for the team."

Former Bantam Jon Worthington has signed for Blue Square Bet Premier Mansfield Town on a one-year contract. The 28-year-old midfielder was released from Valley Parade by Peter Jackson last month, following the expiry of his short-term contract.

The ex-Huddersfield Town man was signed from League One side Oldham Athletic on a month's emergency loan back in January, but within days his contract was cancelled by Oldham and Peter Taylor gave him a contract to stay with City until the end of the season. He went on to play for the Bantams 16 times and I'm sure many people expected Jackson to bring him back for next season.

Jon told http://www.mansfieldtown.net: “I'm delighted to have signed. I came and met the manager and was pleased to hear about his ambitions for the club. As a midfielder, I can get box to box or act as the 'sitting player.' I like to get 'a foot in' and work hard for the team and be an important cog in the side.”
