Mansfield Town boss Paul Cox vows to spend wisely CHAD.co.uk, Tuesday 14 June 2011 MANSFIELD Town boss Paul Cox says he will not make big name, big money signings for the sake of it as he continues to put together a squad capable of challenging for promotion. http://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-fc/mansfield_town_boss_paul_cox_vows_to_spend_wisely_1_3478164 The new Field Mill bosssaid he has “a lot of irons in a lot of fires” regarding future signings and, with pre-season getting ever closer, there will be more activity in the coming weeks as more players make themselves available. “It's a case of talking and sitting down with targets and dotting the 'i's and crossing the 't's on the finances and doing homework on players,” he said. “I don't want to dive in and sign the first player that comes along - I want to be more astute and do my homework.” Cox has made six signings for the Stags since arriving from Eastwood Town, adding 23-year-old striker Ross Dyer from Forest Green Rovers, former Port Vale trainee Matt Bell (19), and Alfreton Town's attacking winger Anthony Howell to his squad on one-year deals. Dyer was a regular in Forest Green Rovers line up last season and moved to Mansfield for a fee to be agreed by both clubs. Meanwhile Bell, a left back, featured heavily in Vale's reserves last season and now wants to make the step up to first team action. And as Cox looks to add further to a Stags' squad that he said will contain both good non-league players and those who are prepared to drop down to the Blue Square Bet Premier from the Football League, he said that he will not spend a lot of money on players who do not have Mansfield Town's interests at heart. He said: “This is a big club, but signing massive players is not always the answer. “We want ex-Football League players who have the right mentality and desire levels.” Cox admitted that some of the rumours doing the rounds about potential signings have been accurate, but he does not want to sign big name players who cannot do the job required and who are on relatively big wages. “In terms of players coming into the football club, I have got to be really astute with who I bring in and don't waste with the money I have got,” he said. “I am trying to put together a good team that wins consistently and is in the push for promotion come the end of the season.” Cox also said that he is getting nearer to appointing his assistant. “It's been narrowed down,” he said. “I have not offered the job to someone yet - I have spoken to one or two people, put the package to them, asked them to think about it and get back to me.” ---------------- Stags boss Cox won't be forced into big-name signings Nottingham Post, Wednesday, June 15, 2011 PAUL Cox insists he will not bow to the clamour from Mansfield Town fans for big-name signings – unless they are worth the money. http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/Stags-boss-Cox-won-t-forced-big-signings/story-12771802-detail/story.html? The Stags boss is well aware some supporters may be underwhelmed by the additions he has made to his squad. Of six new faces, only Paul Bolland has significant Football League experience. But Cox says he has been 'meticulous' in his research and is convinced his recruits will do a good job. And he is adamant that if the right kind of star player becomes available, he will not be frightened to 'push the boat out'. "Supporters want big-name signings and as a fan I would want that myself," said Cox. "I will sign a big-name player and spend that extra bit more – but only if I really thought they were worth it. "They have to be at the right price and you have to know that they have the desire to play 35 to 40 games a season. "I could go out and get a striker who has played 350 league games, but if they only play five games because they don't fancy it, then people aren't going to be happy." Cox revealed that former Tranmere and Crewe striker Calvin Zola is one of a plethora of targets. He said: "There is a big rumour mill and some of those names that are circulating will be true.
