STAGS FA CUP TIE NOT YET CHOSEN FOR LIVE TV
29th October 2002 8:06

... but still one tie to be selected.

Cup TV ties selected

The two FA Cup 1st Round Proper ties chosen for live TV coverage are both classic David v Goliath clashes. Hereford United of the Nationwide Conference entertain Wigan Athletic, riding high in the Nationwide League Division 2, and Forest Green Rovers, also from the Conference, play at home to Exeter City from Division 3.

Hereford will always be remembered for their romantic progress through to the Cup's Fourth Round Proper in 1972 when they were a Southern League club. They drew 2-2 against First Division Newcastle United at St James' Park in Round 3 and then won the replay at Edgar Street 2-1 after extra time, with Ronny Radford's late equaliser from about 30 yards established forever in the Cup's folklore. Four days later they held West Ham United to a 0-0 home draw in Round 4, before the dream ended at Upton Park.

Hereford are currently near the top of the Conference, strangely with an away record that is much better than their home record. Last season in the FA Cup they knocked out Second Division Wrexham in the First Round and then lost by the odd goal in five at Swindon in Round 2. They obviously enjoy bringing on the League clubs in the Cup and Wigan, despite their lofty position in Division 2, won't relish going to Edgar Street. Wigan were the object of a 'giantkilling' themselves last year, going down 0-1 at home to Ryman League Canvey Island in the First Round.

Forest Green Rovers from Gloucestershire, a club pulling away from the bottom of the Conference under new boss Colin Addison, won the FA Vase in 1982 and have appeared in two of the last four FA Trophy Finals. They know all about knockout competitions. In last season's FA Cup First Round they held Third Division Macclesfield Town to a 2-2 away draw and only went out on penalties (11-10!) in the replay. In 1999 a crowd of just under 3,000 at The Lawn saw them take on another Division 3 outfit, Torquay United, in Round 2. Exeter, who are having a tough time in Division 3, also have recent experience of being on the wrong end of a Cup 'giantkilling' - Dagenham & Redbridge of the Conference beat them 3-0 in a Second Round replay last season.

Another tie, as yet undecided, will be screened live on Sky Sports on Saturday 16th with a 12 noon kick off. All clubs featuring in live 1st Round broadcasts will each receive a £100,000 TV fee.

Here are those ties and the timings:

SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER 2002
23 Hereford United v Wigan Athletic 5.35 (live on Sky)

SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2002
