SCOTT GARNER LEAVES FOR GRIMSBY,BROUGH JOINS DARLO
14th July 2010 12:37

Scott Garner, captain of the England C team less than 2 months ago, has been transferred to Grimsby Town. The Stags have signed Steve Foster and Chris Smith, both centre halves, during the close season.

Garner told sportgrimsby.co.uk: "I played a lot of games last season for Mansfield and I'm not sure exactly how the move came about.
Grimsby boss Woods told sportgrimsby.co.uk: "He had a good year last year at Mansfield and ended up captaining both them and the England C team.
Woods believes the signing is a coup and admits he was shocked the Stags released a player with so much potential.
He went on: "I was surprised he was let go if I'm being honest.
"I think there was a little bit of an issue that went on which isn't really our concern but hopefully we'll benefit from that."

Garner sacrificed for incoming face
CHAD.co.uk, 08 July 2010, By John Lomas
SCOTT Garner was moved out to Grimsby this week due to the need for a more flexible defender and the exciting emergence of Tom Naylor.

Some Stags fans had questioned the decision to allow the young defender to leave the club, particularly after boss David Holdsworth had predicted he would eventually play at a high level.

But, with two experienced quality centre halves already in the club and young Naylor impressing out on loan last season, the decision was taken to move out Garner, whose only position was centre half, to bring in a player that can play in the centre or as cover at full back as well.

That decision dovetails with the announced decision to go with a smaller, more flexible squad this season on the same budget and Garner's replacement may be signed by tomorrow.

"This was an opportunity for Scott that came out of the blue and the decision was made because of the position of myself and that of Tom Naylor," said Holdsworth.

"Circumstances change frequently, even at the top level, and sometimes you have to shuffle things around.

"I want to develop Tom this season and also to bring in a flexible defender that can play two positions."

Stags could have asked for a fee for a player aged under 24 who was still under contract but it would seem the need to free up Garner's wages for the incoming player took precedence.

Holdsworth would only say: "I have no comment to make on the finances of the deal except to say we have a good sell-on clause which I know as I negotiated it. The rest of the deal is private and will remain that way."

Holdsworth continues to look for two more strikers to replace Jake Speight and Kyle Perry but insisted: "We will bring players in but there is no panic.

"I will also give an opportunity to young Lee Gregory who I have watched over the last two or three years and I am keen to develop. I think Lee will enjoy getting that opportunity."

New Grimsby Town signing Scott Garner eager to get started

NEW boy Scott Garner is eager to get down to business in a Grimsby Town shirt at Brigg tomorrow after signing from Mansfield Town.
As reported on sportgrimsby.co.uk, the 20-year-old defender has agreed a two-year contract at Town with the option of an extra year.
Town haven't had to fork out a fee for the youngster but it's understood the deal includes an undisclosed sell-on clause.
And the former Leicester trainee, who captained both Mansfield and the England 'C' team last season, despite his young age, is relishing his move to Cleethorpes and playing for a club he feels is too big for non-league.
Garner said: "I'm very excited about starting afresh with a new team and can't wait to get going this season.
"I played a lot of games last season for Mansfield and I'm not sure exactly how the move came about.
"But I'm glad to be here at Grimsby now and hopefully we'll be pushing for promotion like we should be.
"I met the manager, chairman and all the players and it seems a fantastic club.
"Grimsby is a massive club – too big to be in this league really.
"We have to be thinking about winning the league, or at least getting promotion."
Boss Woods is equally delighted to sign a player whose progress he has monitored for several years.
And he believes it adds more competition and balance to his defensive department.
Woods said: "Scott is someone I've been aware of for a couple of years – since my Youth days when he was a lad at Leicester.
"He had a good year last year at Mansfield and ended up captaining both them and the England C team.
"He's a 6ft 2in, left-footed centre-back and gives us good competition with Darran (Kempson) and Rob (Atkinson).
"It also gives us balance on the left side.
"His attitude is terrific – he wants to learn and improve."
Woods believes the signing is a coup and admits he was shocked the Stags released a player with so much potential.
He went on: "I was surprised he was let go if I'm being honest.
"I think there was a little bit of an issue that went on which isn't really our concern but hopefully we'll benefit from that.
"He's a cracking lad and certainly one for the future.
"Even when we started negotiations, he just wanted to sign straight away.
"It's refreshing because it wasn't about money, it was about joining a big club and progressing his career."
Even the man who signed the Coventry-born defender at Field Mill but is now losing him to Town, Stags' boss David Holdsworth, says he can play at a high level.
Holdsworth told the Mansfield website: "Having worked with Scott for the past three years I know he has the ability to go to the highest level.
"I would like to thank Scott for his efforts whilst with us and wish him every success for the future."

Darlington sign ex-Mansfield midfielder Michael Brough
BBC.co.uk, 5 July 2010

Darlington have completed the signing of former Mansfield midfielder Michael Brough on a one-year deal.

Brough, 28, has extensive Football League and non-league experience, having made 278 professional appearances during his career.

The Nottingham-born player, who is comfortable at centre-half or in midfield, ended his spell at Mansfield at the end of last season.

He is new boss Mark Cooper's first addition to the Quakers squad.

In addition to his spell at Mansfield, Brough enjoyed a six-year stay at hometown club Notts County before making the move to Stevenage in 2004.

Spells at Forest Green Rovers, Torquay United and Salisbury City followed before another stint at Stevenage, and then Mansfield with whom Brough remained until the end of the previous campaign.
