The 22 year old, who can play at centre half, left back or left midfield, progressed through Rovers' academy system.

He went on to make over 170 appearances for the club and was voted the supporters' player of the season in 08/09. He also holds the record for being the youngest player in the Conference to have reached 100 matches played.

Speaking to http://www.mansfieldtown.net he said: "I am delighted to have finally signed for the club after a few weeks of talks.

"There was interest from other clubs but it was an easy decision once I knew Mansfield were interested.

"I'd like to play in the Football League and coming here will give me a platform to do that."

He follows Adam Smith, Chris Smith, Kevin Sandwith and Steve Foster by penning a one year deal.

Said Manager David Holdsworth: "I am thrilled Paul has joined us. It is a big commitment for him but it is testament to Paul that he wishes to come away from his comfort zone.

"He loves a tackle and has an excellent left foot," he added.

Paul Stonehouse Leaves Forest Green Rovers
forestgreenroversfc.com, 03/06/2010

Forest Green Rovers announce that their 22 yr old club captain Paul Stonehouse has today signed for Mansfield Town for the coming season. Despite being offered terms by Forest Green for next season, the uncertainty existing where Rovers will play next season was instrumental in his move to the Stags, combined with the offer of better personal terms. Paul was the only player last season to appear in every Blue Square Premier fixture making 41 starts and 3 substitutions.

Wiltshire based Paul joined Rovers as a 16 yr old through our college and academy links in place at the time along with his older brother. Paul went on to sign his first professional contract with the club in August 2005 and initially spent time out on loan to gain much needed experience.

A player who always showed an aptitude to learning from his peers, he is able to play in a variety of positions but during the last two seasons he has become an accomplished left full back and at his age he has many seasons left to mature in such a specialist position.

He was the youngest player with the club ever to make 100 Blue Square Premier starts for Rovers and in total he made 177 1st team appearances scoring 7 goals, with his most memorable being his right footed shot which put his team 3 – 2 up against Derby County in the 2008/09 FA Cup 3rd Round.

Rovers wish Paul the very best in his new environment and thank him for his loyal service.

Due to his age, and that he had been offered re-engagement terms for the forthcoming season, Mansfield Town have agreed a compensation fee for Paul's registration. The amount involved will remain a private matter however between both clubs due to other players at this time being subject of similar possible transactions in and out at the New Lawn and Field Mill.

Mansfield Town have signed midfielder Paul Stonehouse from Forest Green Rovers for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old was offered a new deal by Rovers, but turned it down due to the uncertainty where the club will play next season.

Stonehouse was Rovers' captain and was the only player to appear in all of the club's matches last season.

He joined Forest Green at the age of 16 and signed his first professional contract in August 2005.

A statement of the Forest Green website said: "Rovers wish Paul the very best in his new environment and thank him for his loyal service.

"Due to his age, and that he had been offered re-engagement terms for the forthcoming season, Mansfield Town have agreed a compensation fee for Paul's registration.

"The amount involved will remain a private matter however between both clubs due to other players at this time being subject of similar possible transactions in and out at the New Lawn and Field Mill."

Stonehouse was the youngest player to make 100 Blue Square Premier starts for Rovers and in total made 177 first-team appearances.

He scored seven goals for the club, including one against Derby County in the FA Cup third round back in the 2008/09 season.

Forest Green Rovers skipper Paul Stonehouse quits to join Mansfield Town

CAPTAIN Paul Stonehouse has left Forest Green Rovers to sign for Blue Square Premier outfit Mansfield Town.

The versatile 22-year-old, a product of the club's youth development system, was the only player to feature in every one of Rovers' games last season.

As he was under the age of 24, Rovers are entitled to compensation under the terms of the Bosman ruling, but the exact amount will remain private between the two clubs.

Rovers manager Dave Hockaday said it was a blow to lose the services of his captain.

"It's obviously disappointing that he's gone, but that's football," said Hockaday.

"Paul has been a great servant to Forest Green Rovers, but he feels that the time is right for a fresh challenge at Mansfield and we have to respect that."

Stonehouse joined Rovers at the age of 16 and progressed through the ranks to sign his first professional contract in 2005.

After spending time out on loan at Gloucester City, he broke into the side and following the departure of Anthony Tonkin, made the left-back slot his own.

The desire of the Stags to return to the Football League under the management of former Birmingham City manager David Holdsworth persuaded Stonehouse to move to Nottinghamshire.

"I am delighted to have finally signed for the club after a few weeks of talks," said Stonehouse.

"There was interest from other clubs but it was an easy decision I knew Mansfield were interested.

"I'd like to play in the Football League and coming here will give me a platform to do that."

Stonehouse a key piece to Mansfield Town jigsaw, says manager David Holdsworth
Evening Post, 26 June 2010
PAUL Stonehouse's versatility and Blue Square Premier experience were key attractions to Mansfield Town, manager David Holdsworth said today.

http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/sport/Stonehouse-key-piece-Field-jigsaw/article-2350076-detail/article.html?

The 22-year-old full-back made more than 170 appearances for Forest Green before switching to Field Mill.

Stonehouse can be deployed at left-back, on the left side of midfield or in a central role.

"Paul plays a number of positions and versatility will be vital because we have a smaller squad," said Holdsworth.

"It's all very well blooding players from lower divisions but if we are going to be able to sustain a challenge this coming season we need players who know this division, like Paul."

Holdsworth is staying tight-lipped about how he will use the man who holds the record as the youngest player to reach 100 appearances in the Blue Square Premier.

But he insists both Stonehouse and fellow new arrival Kevin Sandwith are to the forefront of his thinking.

Holdsworth said: "I haven't brought either of them here to sit on the sidelines.

"If they want to fight for the left-back position, then no problem but likewise I know both players can play in a midfield three as well."
