Stags midfielder Andy Burgess charged by FA over illegal match betting

STAGS loanee Andy Burgess has been charged with two counts of illegally betting on football matches by the FA.

Burgess, who scored in last night's 3-1 win at Gateshead, is charged with two breaches of FA Rule E8a when he is alleged to have bet on the outcome of the Rushden v Mansfield game on 28th February 2009 and Rushden v Kidderminster on 15th November 2008.

Burgess, who was playing for Rushden at the time of the alleged offences, has until Friday to respond.

We were fully aware of the FA charges put forward to Andrew Burgess prior to his signing on loan from Luton Town.

Burgess was charged by the FA with two counts of betting on matches in which he played, while at Rushden & Diamonds.

A club spokesman said: "We were aware of this prior to Andrew joining us.

"We have spoken to Andrew about the matter and the charges are being refuted.We don't anticipate any issues arising as a result of this."

The spokesman added:"All players at Mansfield Town Football Club are aware of the rules and regulations when it comes to betting on football matches."
