Stags in 'Battle of Britain' on St David's Day
CHAD.co.uk, 28Feb2008, By John Lomas
EMOTIONS will be high when Stags arrive in Wales on St David's Day for their huge 'Battle of Britain' on Saturday.
The game pits second from bottom Stags away to bottom side Wrexham and the home side, without a win or a goal in three games, know victory could pull them within a point of Mansfield but defeat would leave them seven points adrift.
"Yes, it is a big game, but they are all big games," said boss Billy Dearden.

"There is pressure but Wrexham are under a lot of pressure as we,ll as are a lot of the sides down there. At least we are winning the odd game and winning matches away from home. We just can't get it together at home, though at least we go there on Saturday having stopped the rot at home on Tuesday.

"We have won five away on the trot and Wrexham will not be looking forward to us going there. It will be a big battle and a lot can change in one game.

"People keep telling me it is St David's Day on Saturday and apparently there is going to be a brass band before the kick-off. But I am not bothered about any of that stuff. Let's go there and upset the applecart.

Tremendous

"We are going there to win and get three points. And, if we can't win it, let's make sure we don't lose it.

"I have been involved in some tremendous games at Wrexham, especially as a player when I was with Chester and it was a local derby. I have played in front of 16,000 people at the Racecourse Ground."

He added: "I am looking forward to seeing their manager Brian Little. We are a couple of old heads - well one older head and one a bit younger, shall we say?

"But there is no problem between me and Brian and I will have a drink and a chat with him after the game. I am also looking forward to seeing Martin Foyle who is helping Brian out until the end of the season. Martin was at Port Vale when I was there.

"It would be nice if both teams could get out of this mess as they are two decent clubs. Wrexham are a bigger club than we are but they, like us, are down there for a reason and that is that they have not won enough football matches.

"Brian has brought in 10 or 12 new players which sometimes goes for you and sometimes doesn't. I don't think they have had the results they expected so far when they brought those players in. It takes time to gel and let's hope that isn't Saturday."

Dearden could be without Irish midfielder Stephen Dawson again on Saturday. He fell ill just before Tuesday night's home draw with Bury and was not back in by today (Thursday).

Matt Hamshaw has also been under the weather with a similar bug while Michael Boulding again missed training today as he nurses a kick on the hip, though is expected to be fit enough to face the Dragons.

Bap set to return for Stags' crunch relegation trip
CHAD.co.uk 28Feb2008
ALEX John-Baptiste could find himself in the Mansfield Town 16 to face bottom of the table Wrexham on Saturday.
The young defender was back in full training this week after another two-month lay-off with his back problem.

But manager Billy Dearden said: "Alex looked strong in training yesterday which is good news.
"It is nice to know he is there if we needed to call upon him for the weekend."

'Bap' last played in the defeat at Chesterfield on 22nd December.

Wrexham under pressure too - Buxton
CHAD.co.uk, 28Feb 2008
STAGS skipper Jake Buxton underlined that Saturday's opponents Wrexham are under as much pressure as Mansfield to win this relegation showdown.
Although Stags fans are talking about how much pressure their side are under to get a win in Wales on Saturday, Buxton said: "It is a big game for both clubs – and they are at home.

"We are playing much better away from home. We can defend and soak it up like a sponge and then hit them on the counter-attack, which is what we have been doing recently.

"But it would be good to take the game to them and get them on the back foot.

"Wrexham have signed some good players and we will have to keep Drewe Broughton quiet as he is one their main threats.

"We will go there very positive. We have been on the slippery slope at home but we got a result against Bury on Tuesday and we can build on that on Saturday.

"We kept getting in the blocks and defended well on Tuesday and we thought we had done enough to win it until they scored at the death.

"It was nice to score and help us to a vital point. Always go up for corners and free kicks and I have been making a nuisance of myself in the box but not scoring as many goals as I would have liked to."

Will Atkinson, currently on loan from Hull City, has made five starts and two substitute appearances for us, since joining us in late January.
Manager Bill Dearden told mansfieldtown.net: "We want Will to stay here, and Hull have agreed to it. So the extension suits both parties."
Hull have the option of a 24 hour recall should they decide to use it.
