New Stags book published
CHAD.co.uk, 21 Sep 2007
By Tim Morriss
IF you are a Stags' fan and like photographs, then a new book is just for you.
Images of Sport: Mansfield Town Football Club is packed with photos from more than 100 years of Stags' history - from the pre-League years at the turn of the 20th century right through to modern day hero Richie Barker and the latest manager Billy Dearden.

Each of the 200plus photographs - some published for the first time - has its own detailed caption as readers are taken along a journey into the football's club past and present through 128 fascinating pages.

The book has been collated by Paul Taylor, Mansfield Town FC historian and honorary president of the Stags Supporters Association, and SSA committee member, SSA website co-ordinator and historian Martin Shaw.

Included in the collection are team photos from every season possible since the club's formation in 1897, action shots of important goals and key games, player portraits, plus photographs of Field Mill as it has been developed.

It is those team photos which were the inspiration for the book.

Martin told Chad.co.uk: "On Stagsnet we have a collection of team photos from every season back to 1930, plus a few from years before that.

"No other club has a website, official or unofficial, with such a photographic record. This was mentioned in a review in an away matchday programme, Tempus also picked up on it and asked if we were interested in publishing a book on the history of the Stags with the team photos.

"Because we are absolutely mad, we said yes!"

Remarkably Martin - who lives in Guildford and has a scrapbook collection of reports from every Stags game since the early 1930s - and Paul then completed the book in just seven working days, from start to finish.

Martin added: "We already had a lot of the photographs, so we just needed to sit down and organise which ones we wanted to use, how we were going to structure the book and write the captions.

"We both booked three lots of two days off work and worked solidly for those days to get it all written and collated. Then we spent a further day proof reading."

Naturally, the collating of the book was built around Stags' games and the duo worked at the Mansfield home of Paul's mother.

Paul added: "We tried to include images that would evoke fond memories of the Stags from whichever era is the reader's favourite."
