JERVIS EXPECTED TO BE FIT

STAGS BOSS HANDS HIMSELF FINE

BY IAN WILKERSON, Evening Post, 16 August 2002

Manager Stuart Watkiss has fined himself after being sent from the bench during Mansfield Town's latest match.

Watkiss was banished to the director's box after a blast at referee Paul Robinson who had just sent off midfielder Scott Sellars.

The incident took place during Tuesday's 3-2 defeat at Wigan.

Watkiss will receive a fine from the FA as well but has decided to punish himself for his indiscretion.

The undisclosed amount will go into club funds.

He said: "There was no justification for me to react the way I did.

"It was not acceptable and the worst thing was that it stopped me from doing my job properly.

"I will never be one of these managers who sits in the stand and watch the game. I want to be on the touchline and be involved."

It will not be clear whether Watkiss will receive a touchline ban until the Hull referee's report has been received, but Watkiss admits his guilt.

He said: "I will accept any punishment that is coming. I have apologised to our chairman for what happened and I will apologise to the players too.

"I have definitely learned from it and I would like to think that it will never happen again."

Meanwhile, David Jervis is expected to be fit to take his place in the defence for the Stags' trip to Wycombe tomorrow.

He picked up a hand injury at the JJB Stadium but an X-ray has been encouraging enough for him to feature.

Watkiss is expecting a difficult match against Wanderers.

He said: "It's going to be a big test for us, like they all are this season.

"But, if we play like we did in the first two games, we should give a good account of ourselves."

MANSFIELD (probable): Pilkington, Reddington, Moore, Jervis, Lawrence, Sellars, Williamson, Disley, MacKenzie, Larkin, A White. Subs: Corden, Bacon, Christie, J White, Clarke.

BBC.co.uk:
Striker Craig Faulconbridge returns to Wycombe's starting line-up after missing the midweek draw with Northampton with a groin strain.
Faulconbridge is set to replace Stuart Roberts, who looks likely to miss the match altogether with an ankle injury.

Keith Ryan (calf), Andy Rammell (calf) and Richard Harris (knee) are all sidelined but due to return to training next week.

Gavin Holligan is six weeks away from a comeback, whle both Jermaine McSporran and Martyn Lee are out with ligament damage.

Mansfield boss Stuart Watkiss has even less players to choose from because of the club's ever-growing injury list.

Defender David Jervis, who sustained a wrist injury, is the latest player out.

Allen Tankard is still hampered by a hamstring complaint, while Bobby Hassell has not yet returned to training because of a knee injury.
