Stags land Russell on loan
CHAD website, 17 November 2005

MANSFIELD Town have taken Macclesfield Town striker Allan Russell on loan until 1st January.
Russell (24) only joined the Silkmen in the summer and netted one of his two goals against the Stags.
But he has been embroiled in a contract dispute up there since being told he was one of four players no longer in manager Brian Horton's plans, one of the others listed being his good friend and former Stags Neil MacKenzie.
"I don't really want to talk too much about my contract dispute at Macclesfield," he said.
"That's football and I just have to deal with it. I am just happy to be here and in with a chance of playing again.
"I know the two strikers are here are doing really well right now which is good for the team and I will have to fight for a place.
"I've spoken to my good friend Neil MacKenzie at Macclesfield and he's told me all about the club. He speaks very highly of Mansfield Town.
"I see this as a big club. From what I have heard they are in a false position and shouldn't be near the bottom of this league, if in this league at all.
"As a player I am strong and like to get at people. I haven't scored as many goals as I would have liked this season but I hope I can start scoring now.
"The most important thing is that the team carries on getting results. Things have started to look up since Peter Shirtliff took over. Hopefully I can add to that and the team can start climbing the table.
"Obviously I am initially on loan until the end of the year. But I would like to make a permanent move here or wherever."
Russell began his career at Hamilton Academicals, where he made his debut in 1999. The following season he helped them win Division Three, scoring seven goals in 27 games.
The six foot striker moved on to St Mirren where he netted nine goals in 29 games before heading south in the summer to join Macclesfield.
A hip injury hampered his start to the season before he got into the side to net two in two games. But it has now all turned sour there for him.
"This is not a knee-jerk reaction to last week's result against Bury," said Stags boss Peter Shirtliff.
"I have been looking to bring another striker in here since I took over and Allan fits the bill.
"I saw him play against Rushden and Diamonds and he worked hard. Then he scored against us and I thought played quite well.
"I found out he was available and, most importantly, he wanted to come here and compete for a place.
"I have made a lot of enquiries about him and everyone I spoke to said he was a good lad and a willing player. He will create competition for places and give me another option."
Russell has ben given permission to play in the FA Cup tie against Grays and will be at least on the bench at Shrewsbury on Saturday, though could be in line for a start if Simon Brown fails to shake off a hamstring problem.
Promising young Stags midfielder Callum Lloyd has joined Conference North neighbours Alfreton Town on a month's loan.
Lloyd made an impace on the first team towards the end of last season but has found himself well down the pecking order this term."
"It will do Callum good to get some first team competitive football at a decent level," said Shirtliff.
"He's done OK here. He's a good type who has still got a lot to learn. But he is one for the future."
The 19-year-old has scored four goals in 14 starts and seven sub appearances.
