Teamtalk.com, 20 Jan 05

Peterborough defender Gareth Jelleyman's protracted transfer to Mansfield has been completed, subject to a medical.

The 24-year-old defender is currently struggling with a hamstring niggle but has signed a short-term deal and been named in the Stags' squad to face Southend at Field Mill on Saturday.

A full medical has been arranged after which Jelleyman is expected to sign a permanent contract.

Caretaker manager Carlton Palmer said: "The deal was set up a long time ago but Barry Fry didn't want to let Jelleyman go and had other offers.

"But Barry phoned me on Wednesday and said he had spoken to Jelleyman who wanted to come to Mansfield.

"Barry said Jelleyman was in the plans for his team on Saturday but if a deal had to be agreed he would stand by it."

Carlton gets his Man...
Carlton finally gets his man! After chasing Gareth Jelleyman from League 1 outfit Peterborough the Stags Caretaker manager has finally landed the versatile left footer.

"The deal was set up a long time ago but Barry Fry didn't want to let Jelleyman go and had other offers" Palmer said today but talks with the player and his agent were honoured by the Peterborough boss.

"Barry phoned me yesterday and said that he spoken to Jelleyman who had said that he wanted to come to Mansfield and that he was in the plans for team on Saturday but if a deal has been agreed he would stand by it" he added.

As Carlton's plans include Jelleyman for the weekend visit of Southend United it is too short notice for the player to have a full medical as the surgeon who will carrying it out is currently tied up with Adam Eaton's injury so the left footer who can play Left full back, Left Centre back or wide left midfield will be signing a short term loan deal. He will then undergo his medical on Friday afternoon and if everything checks out as we hope he will sign a permanent deal oh Monday.

Jelleyman is a player that is raved about by everybody who talks about him some even saying that he is one of Peterborough's best players and should be a great asset to the stags as they make the final push for the play-offs.

"We have done well to get him here and that is great credit to the chairman, he arrived back yesterday after travelling for 23 hours and is great that he came in the office to agree the deal." Palmer told the official website.

MARK ROACH

Gareth Jelleyman looks set to make his Mansfield Town debut against Southend on Saturday.

Carlton Palmer confirmed that the Peterborough defender is the left back he has been chasing - and expects him to sign today. The Stags caretaker-boss has also agreed a deal with Macclesfield for Neil MacKenzie.

"I've agreed a deal for Gareth Jelleyman and he is having a medical today," said Palmer.

"It will release Alex Neil to play in midfield.

"I've done a deal with Macclesfield for MacKenzie and, if for some reason that doesn't go through, I've agreed a deal with another club."

Palmer has also spoken to Wolves boss Glenn Hoddle about 21-year-old midfielder Sammy Clingan, who has been on loan at Chesterfield.
