STAGS HUNTING FOR PROMOTION
Evening Post, 27 December 2004
Kevin Pilkington says the postponement of yesterday's game against Cambridge United will not affect player morale ahead of tomorrow's trip to high-flying Southend.

Mansfield's League Two clash against Cambridge was postponed following an 11am inspection yesterday because of a frozen pitch.

The players reported for training instead, and Pilkington says the Stags are confident they can record their second successive away win in Essex.

"It was a bit frustrating, but there's nothing you can do about the weather," said the Mansfield keeper.

"We've just got to get on with it. It will be a difficult game at Southend. They're doing well.

"I know one or two of the players there and they'll be up for it. They will be looking at the game as a chance to pick up three points, but so will we.

"The mood hasn't changed, we're a confident bunch of players and we are looking for nine points from our next three games.

"You can't go into games looking for draws, we go into every game looking for a win. Our aim this season is still to get promotion."

Caretaker boss Carlton Palmer is expected to name the same 11 who started at Shrewsbury.

He was looking to add a loan signing to the bench for yesterday's game at Field Mill, but had been unable to secure in time the services of the left back he was targeting.

Southend are without Duncan Jupp, who is ruled out for up to three weeks following a training ground injury.

Goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan is still recovering from a bruised heel. Jay Smith is out for the season.

Mansfield: Pilkington, Neil, John-Baptiste, Dimech, Buxton, Warne, Curtis, Murray, Corden, Asamoah, Barker, White, Brown, McLachlan, Kitamirike, Maxwell.

Southend: Griemink, Hunt, Edwards, Barrett, Wilson, Pettefer, Maher, Bentley, Gower, Gray, Eastwood, Nicolau, Dudfield, Flahavan, Bramble, Corbett.
