MENDES AGENT HITS BACK AT CLAIMS
9th July 2004 18:35

mansfieldtown.net reports that Junior Mendes and his representative Roger Campbell have asked for their reply to made public (see rarlier story below):

"When we heard the comments that the Manager made about not being able to match the offer made by Huddersfield and that if he could he wouldnt to Junior. We felt a little disappointed and believed the comment to be unfair however, we have accepted the comments and bear no malice to the manager or the football club." Said Roger on behalf of his client.

"Another rumour that started to circulate amongst the press was that Huddersfield approached Junior in an un-proper manner before the play off finals had taken place. We can one hundred percent refute these allegations.

"An offer was made by Mansfield Town before the season close but Huddersfield did not come in with an offer until the season had finished following the play off final on the 31st May. It wouldnt have made sense for them to as nobody could have known which club would end up in which division.

"A few enquiries and offers were made about Junior from other clubs but the most attractive was that from Peter Jackson and Huddersfield Town. This was due to them playing in a higher division and the deal that was offered. Junior returned to England from Scotland in a bid to re-establish his career in English Football and to play at the highest level possible. To this end he would like to publicly thank the Manager (Keith Curle), the Club, the fans and all players for all the time and help during his stay at Mansfield Town FC, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

"Junior would like to wish everybody associated with the club all the very best for the forthcoming season. And, on a personal note would like to thank Keith Curle for giving him the opportunity to play for Mansfield Town and get his foot back on the ladder of English Football."

Junior echoed his agent by saying:

"I would like to this opportunity to thank all the Mansfield Town fans for staying behind me and helping me through my slow start. But i would like to extend a big thank you to the gaffer (Keith Curle) and Ganns (John Gannon) for their help and encouragement during my time at Field Mill and one last thank you to the lads and all the backroom staff that made my stay at Field Mill enjoyable.

"I wish you all the very best for the forthcoming season and look forward to meeting you all soon"

The agent acting for Mansfield striker Junior Mendes has hit back at suggestions that Huddersfield approached the player prior to his transfer.

Mendes had been offered a new contract at Field Mill but opted instead to join the Terriers on a two-year deal after Huddersfield won promotion to League One.

Agent Roger Campbell said: "When we heard the comments Keith Curle made about not being able to match the offer made by Huddersfield and that if he could he wouldn't, we felt a little disappointed and believed the comment to be unfair.

"However, we have accepted the comments and bear no malice to the manager or the football club.

"Another rumour which started to circulate among the press was that Huddersfield approached Junior in an improper manner before the play off finals had taken place but we can refute these allegations 100%.

"An offer was made by Mansfield Town before the season closed but Huddersfield did not come in with an offer until the season had finished, following the play off final on 31 May."
