VAUGHAN CLOSE TO DEAL, BUT SIMPSON LEAVES
21st July 2003 14:32

Tony Vaughan who appeared back at Field Mill recently is said to be close to signing a deal with the Stags making him the first signing of the 2003/04 season.

Keith Curle told mansfieldtown.net: "I have liked what I have seen of Tony on the training ground and in the friendly against Sheffield FC the other day and feel that he will fit into the squad easily. We are in talks with Tony and have made an offer and we both feel that a deal is very close. W also made an offer to Fitzroy Simpson but unfortunately a resolve could not be met and Fitzroy is no longer training with us"

Regarding Dave Artell, Curle told mansfieldtown.net: "I like what I have seen of Dave, I think that he will be brilliant defender in this division. He is continuing training with us for the foreseeable future."

mansfieldtown.net reports that Alex John-Baptiste has only sprained his wrist after it was feared that he fractured it on Saturday. This means he will be able to continue training as normal.

Meanwhile both Colin Larkin and Adam Eaton have come back to the brink of fitness and should be available for selection for the first game of the season when the Stags travel to Kidderminster. Regarding Larkin, physio Ian Pearce told mansfieldtown.net "that was probably one the proudest moments of my life, to see a player that just a months ago looked like he would be on a long road to recovery net a spectacular goal against a premiership strength squad shows the determination, belief and hard work that we all put in a t Field Mill." Eaton, who played the run-in of last season carrying a bad groin strain, is said to be doing very well after returning back to full training last week. Eaton will playing in a friendly against training facility hosts Forest Town this evening on their pitch at the Miner's Welfare ground in Forest Town.
