Notts Senior Cup, Round 2

Report: Selston FC 0-6 Mansfield Town XI
by James Gates

Striker James Gale scored a second-half hat-trick as a Mansfield Town XI progressed through to the third round of the Notts Senior Cup after beating Selston FC 6-0 at the Parish Hall Ground.

Academy manager Richard Cooper took charge of Wednesday night's encounter.

The Stags’ starting lineup was made up of several younger first-team players such as Gale, Jason Law and Owen Mason as well as the club's under-19s' squad.

Forward Jack Deakin and attacking midfielder Jakub Kruszynski - with a brace - were also on target.

Mansfield started the match on the front foot and caused Selston numerous problems in the opening exchanges.

The first ten minutes of the game saw Gale and Law both come close to opening the scoring.

Selston goalkeeper Joe Fryatt managed to keep the cup tie goalless with a couple of brilliant saves.

It was a first-half full of chances for the amber and blue and after 42 minutes they got their reward.

Stags’ left-back Darien Wauchope whipped the ball into the hosts’ area for Jack Deakin, currently on loan at Barwell FC, who was on hand to tap into the back of the net to break the deadlock.

At half-time, Mansfield made their first substitution of the night as 15-year-old centre-back Cormac Maher replaced Cody Collins at centre-back. Collins produced a strong display in his first outing of the season following an ankle injury.

The Stags doubled their lead three minutes into the second-half.

A brilliant counterattack down the right-hand side following a Selston corner saw Jakub Kruszynski find the top left-hand corner with an outstanding finish over Selston ‘keeper Joe Fryatt.

James Gale found the back of the hosts' net and the Stags' third of the night on 52 minutes with a powerful effort that wrong footed Fryatt.

Stags upped the ante and Gale bagged his second just three minutes later. The former Long Eaton United frontman produced a composed finish into the bottom corner to give Mansfield a 4-0 lead.

The Stags made two substitutions a few minutes either side of the hour mark. Jack Deakin and full-back Taylor Anderson were replaced by attacker McKeal Abdullah and defender Tyler Whyle, respectively.

With 15 minutes left to play, Gale received the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal and after turning onto his right-foot, he curled his effort into the bottom right-hand corner to complete his hat-trick.

Five minutes after scoring his third goal of the evening, Gale was replaced by forward Ronnie Kokkinos in Mansfield's final substitution of the night.

On 87 minutes, Stags’ in form attacker Jakub Kruszynski latched onto the end of a stunning cross from full-back Darien Wauchope to make it 6-0 and put the Stags into the next round of the Notts Senior Cup.
