Gaffer: Stags 'exceptional' against Derby
mansfieldtown.net, Tuesday 4th October 2022

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough says Stags ‘played exceptionally well’ as his men beat Derby 6-5 on penalties at One Call Stadium in the Papa Johns Trophy.

The game went to spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw following 90 minutes.

In normal time, a crowd of over 3,000 witnessed an entertaining encounter which featured a plethora of chances for both sides.

Speaking to iFollow Stags post-match, Nigel said: “I thought we played exceptionally well again on the back of Friday night.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2022/october/gaffer-post-derby-win/

“Going towards half-time we’ve hit the crossbar, had a good shout for a penalty, missed one or two opportunities and we think it’s not going to be our night. We deservedly got back on level terms.

“Second-half I thought [we had] five or six unbelievably good chances.

“[We were] Very close to winning the game tonight [in normal time], but in terms of overall performance again [we had] some outstanding play at times.”

Eight changes were made by the manager, which included a start for midfielder Hiram Boateng for the first time in over a month.

“He’s going to take a little while to get back in the swing of it but that was the most important thing for us tonight to get him back on the pitch,” said Nigel, speaking about Hiram.

“Kieran Wallace was down to play 90 [minutes] but came off after 25 minutes, not ideal.

“Jordan [Bowery] was down to play 90 [and he] felt ill at half-time.

“John-Joe O’Toole was down to play 90 [minutes] and he got a nasty gash on his eyebrow, so it threw our plans a little bit.

“Elliott Hewitt ended up playing 90 minutes but he’s one of our fittest players so he’ll be okay.

“It’s still only the first few days in October and there’s lads who [still] need game time. That’s why we want to stay in the competition because another [game] in November won’t do us any harm at all.”

Ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two match at Barrow, the manager said: “John-Joe [O’Toole] has had quite a few stitches, it was quite a deep and wide cut. The doctor has stitched it up. It looks very neat indeed. We’ll see how he is.

“Everybody is always in it [considered for the matchday squad] because we only have 18 [or] 19 [players]. Everyone is always in our thoughts.

“[It’s] lovely to see Jason Law back on the pitch and Hiram Boateng [we’ll] just see how he is in the next couple of days.”

Mansfield Town impress in penalties win over Derby County but pick up new injury worries
chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Tuesday 4th October 2022

Mansfield Town will run fitness checks on four of their players ahead of Saturday's trip to Barrow after tonight's penalties victory over Derby County in the Papa John's Trophy.

Stags won the shoot-out after the sides had drawn 1-1 in an excellent game that boss Nigel Clough was using to get minutes into the legs of players who had been on the bench recently.

However, he lost three of them early - Keiran Wallace, Jordan Bowery and John-Joe O'Toole - while another - Hiram Boateng - made a first tentative return from his hamstring injury

“We had planned for certain players to play 90 minutes,” said Clough.

https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-impress-in-penalties-win-over-derby-county-but-pick-up-new-injury-worries-3867460

“Kieran Wallace was down to play 90 but came off after 25 minutes, which wasn't ideal. Jordan Bowery was down to play 90 but felt ill at half-time and John-Joe O'Toole was down to play 90 but he got a nasty gash on his eyebrow.

“It sort of threw our plans a little bit.

“John-Joe has had quite a few stitches - it was quite a deep, wide cut. We will have to see how he is as it is about him heading the ball obviously.

“Kieran felt dizzy after a bang on the back of the head which brought on a migraine. He has had that before and we don't take any chances.

“Hiram had his first 60 minutes for quite some time and is going to take some time to get back into the swing of it. The most important thing was getting him back out on the pitch. We will see how he is in the next few days.”

However, Clough was delighted with his side's display.

“It was a good game of football and I thought we played exceptionally well again on the back of Friday night's performance. There was some outstanding play at times.

“So, ultimately, there was disappointment at not getting the three points.

“We created numerous opportunities, especially first half.

“Even 1-0 down before half-time we had hit the crossbar, had a good shout for a penalty, missed one or two opportunities, and you think it's not going to be our night.

“But we deservedly got back on level terms and then second half it was a bit more even but we still had five or six unbelievably good chances.”

He added: “We are in the first few days of October and lads still need game time which is why we want to try to stay in this competition.

“Another one in November wouldn't do us any harm at all. Otherwise we're just arranging friendlies at the training ground. We would much rather play in a competitive game like this.

“I thought for a Papa John's game, which people are quite dismissive of, to get the crowd in we had of over 3,500 - we were getting that for league games a couple of years ago. So it was a brilliant turn-out and they were rewarded with seeing a good game.”

This was the first time Mansfield had won a penalty shoot-out since November 2012 and Clough said: “It was good practice. You don't get many chances to take penalties in a match situation. You never know, we might need it in the FA Cup later in the season.”

Mansfield Town aim for fourth win in a row on the road at high-flying Barrow
chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Tuesday 4th October 2022

Mansfield Town head for fellow high-flyers Barrow on Saturday aiming for a fourth successive away win in succession.

But they know the Bluebirds will be a very different proposition to the one they beat 3-1 away last season and who only just survived the drop.

Stags also lost 1-0 at home to them early in the campaign and had Farrend Rawson sent off in both games.

This season Barrow sit sixth, one place and one point ahead of Mansfield and boss Nigel Clough said: “Surviving last year was a big achievement for them and they have now picked up, changed the manager, changed the players, and they look a different outfit this season.

https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-aim-for-fourth-win-in-a-row-on-the-road-at-high-flying-barrow-3868856

“I think it's down to the confidence of staying up. The new manager has brought some new players in and they have got off to a great start.

“It's amazing what confidence can do for the team if you get a few good results early in a season.

“I hope we can keep 11 men on the pitch this time, that would help.

“But we want to play the same as we have in our last few away games.

“When you think of our last two performances at home we haven't won, yet we've won our last three on the road, sometimes it works out you get the points when you don't expect them.”

Stags will give fitness checks to John-Joe O'Toole (gashed eyebrow), Kieran Wallace (dizziness), and Jordan Bowery (illness) and also hope Hiram Boateng is fit enough to make the squad after his first game for some time on Tuesday following a hamstring lay-off.

Flinders buoyed by Stags' display
mansfieldtown.net, Tuesday 4th October 2022

Mansfield Town goalkeeper Scott Flinders says Stags ‘played some brilliant football’ as they defeated Derby 6-5 on penalties at One Call Stadium in the Papa Johns Trophy.

Stags won the shootout in sudden death following a 1-1 scoreline after 90 minutes of play.

In normal time, Nigel Clough’s men created a hatful of chances in an end-to-end encounter in north Nottinghamshire.

Speaking post-match, Flinders said: “[It’s] always good to play under the lights; a local derby, great atmosphere.

“[We] played some brilliant football so yeah [it was a] really pleasing game.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2022/october/flinders-buoyed-by-stags-display/

“I thought we were excellent. [The] gaffer [Nigel Clough] said at half-time, [there's been] some really good football played. We needed to carry that into the second-half.

“I thought it was brilliant from start to finish. Some of the patterns of play were outstanding.”

On 79 minutes Flinders denied Derby County’s Bartosz Cybulski with a superb save.

“Yeah that's what we’re there for, big saves at big times but like I say the lads defended really well. We should've probably scored a few more goals as well.”

After a 1-1 score after 90 minutes the game went to penalties and Scott praised fellow goalkeeper Christy Pym for his advice in the build-up to tonight's fixture.

“It was Pymy [Christy Pym] that got in my head yesterday in regards to just sticking to diving to my left. So with the first one falling to my left I thank him for that. It’s always nice to make penalty saves and hopefully it gets us through to the next round.”

The 36-year-old joined the club from Cheltenham in the summer and when asked how he’s finding his time at the club so far he said: “Yeah [it’s been] brilliant. I think it was probably the best thing going to Scotland [in pre-season] and getting to know the lads. [It’s a] great group to come into.

“You could see the atmosphere they’ve got between themselves built from last year. Hopefully we go one step further this year and get promoted.”

Speaking about the goalkeepers’ union involving him, Pym and Owen Mason, he said: “I think you need that healthy competition. The standard in training is incredible.

“Christy shouldn't be playing League Two football, not in a million years so it’s a privilege to have his services at Mansfield.

“I’ve been lucky throughout my career, I’ve always been number one. [I’ve] racked up loads of games so I know where I am now in the pecking order.

“I knew what I was coming in for at the start of the season and it’s about giving my experience to the lads playing or Owen [Mason] and the scholars as well, [and] along with Adam [Collin, academy goalkeeping coach] helping the youngsters as well.”

Mansfield Town keeper Scott Flinders shines on rare chance to impress in first team
chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Tuesday 4th October 2022

Goalkeeper Scott Flinders was given a rare chance to impress as he made a crucial late stop and then saved a spot kick in Mansfield Town's penalty shoot-out win over Derby County in last night's Papa John's Trophy clash.

Flinders has had to play second fiddle to Christy Pym since the pair arrived in the summer, playing only the three Papa John's games so far since signing from Cheltenham Town.

But the 36-year-old enjoyed the clash with Derby, which ended 1-1, and said: “That was a local derby, great atmosphere.

“We played some brilliant football. I thought we were excellent.

https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-keeper-scott-flinders-shines-on-rare-chance-to-impress-in-first-team-3868708

“I thought it was brilliant from start to finish. Some of the patterns of play were outstanding.

“It is good playing games at my age, especially under the lights.”

On 79 minutes Flinders denied Derby County’s Bartosz Cybulski with a superb save.

“Yeah that's what we’re there for, big saves at big times but like I say the lads defended really well. And with some of the forward play we should've probably scored a few more goals as well.”

After a 1-1 score after 90 minutes the game went to penalties and Scott praised Pym for his advice in the build-up, saying: “It was Pymy that got in my head yesterday in regards to just sticking to diving to my left.

“I think one of his old coaches said a higher percentage of penalties go to the goalie's left.

“So with the first one falling to my left I thank him for that. It’s always nice to make penalty saves and hopefully it gets us through to the next round.”

Flinders is one of three Stags keepers along with young Owen Mason too, and said: “We push each other massively. I think you need that healthy competition. The standard in training is incredible.

“Christy shouldn't be playing League Two football, not in a million years so it’s a privilege to have his services at Mansfield.

“I’ve been lucky throughout my career, I’ve always been number one. I’ve racked up loads of games so I know where I am now in the pecking order.

“I knew what I was coming in for at the start of the season and it’s about giving my experience to the lads playing or Owen and the scholars as well, and along with Adam Collin (academy goalkeeping coach) helping the youngsters as well, all getting better at the same time.

“I have all my badges ready for when I take a step onto the 'dark side' but I don;t want to finish plying yet. I would like to think I have a few more years in me still.” You are a long time retired. If someone offered you a professional game as a youngster you'd snap their hand off and it's still the same at 36.

“It’s been brilliant signing here and I think it was probably the best thing going to Scotland in pre-season and getting to know the lads. It’s a great group to come into.

“You could see the atmosphere they’ve got between themselves built from last year. Hopefully we go one step further this year and get promoted.”

'It's men' - Derby County head coach Paul Warne gives verdict as Rams beaten by Mansfield
derbytelegraph.co.uk, By Leigh Curtis, 4 OCT 2022

Derby County head coach Paul Warne was happy with his players' efforts but admitted Mansfield Town's experience told at times after the Rams lost a penalty shootout in the Papa John's Trophy.

The Stags clinched two points in the Group F clash by winning the shootout 6-5 with Richard Stearman blazing over the bar after the game finished 1-1 in normal time.

Lewis Dobbin had scored his first goal for the club to give Derby the lead in the first half, but George Maris scored a freak goal as his corner went straight in past Scott Loach.

https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/derby-county-paul-warne-mansfield-7665073

Both sides had chances to win the game in the 90 minutes, but it went to spot-kicks and it was centre-back Stearman who was the unlucky one as he struck over the bar.

Derby managed to pick up a point as a result of going to penalties as Warne made seven changes to his side which largely consisted of young players.

Reflecting on the shootout defeat, Warne said: "I think our strength in depth isn't amazing. We have to look after the first 11 quite obviously and we've got another game on Saturday.

"There are a lot of lads here who need game time. I thought the senior pros committed themselves really well and the young pros are playing against an experienced League Two team.

"It is what it is. It's men. There were times when we were a little bit outmanned and a little bit open. We had a 20-minute spell in the second half when they smoked us.

"In my opinion they could have scored two or three goals then and overall I thought we started the game quite well.

"We just didn't pass the ball as well I would have liked. When we did have control and we did do a tidy-up pass and break down the other side, we looked good, but we didn't do it enough.

"The final ball into the box wasn't as good but overall the lads gave all their effort.

"They were a bit depressed in there and I had try to pick them up with a couple of jokes really.

"They are a little bit down. Nobody wants to lose games even if it's through penalties. There are some really young men in there. Thommo (Liam Thompson) hasn't played for a month.

"Bart hasn't really played bless him. He's had a really good chance. All in all I was pleased with the effort, but the application at times was a little bit misguided.

"But it's our job as coaches to help them. They have got to listen and learn. It's my fault if the message didn't get across tonight but we've been in the building a week. It's not going to happen overnight. We just need to keep helping the players who have been on the periphery so they do understand it when I show them the video on Thursday.

"So if they are called up for a league game on a Saturday they are in a better position."
