STAGS SUBS INSPIRE LATE WIN AT CREWE
29th September 2022 21:52

English Football League - Sky Bet League Two
Crewe Alexandra 1 - 2 Mansfield Town
Baker-Richardson 70. Swan 87, Hawkins 90+3
Attendance: 4,942 (1299 from Mansfield)

Date: 24 September 2022

Martin Shaw at Gresty Road (Mornflake Stadium)

Mansfield Town came from behind to win 2-1 at Crewe with goals after 87 and 90+3 minutes in a thrilling finish. Mansfield had been much the better side for 70 minutes but unable to convert any of their good football into goals. Crewe then had a 90-second purple patch, hitting the post through Dan Agyei, before taking the lead a minute later through Courtney Baker-Richardson. A blow for the Stags. But Mansfield came roaring back with sub Will Swan providing a superb finish from a wonderful ball threaded forward for him by another sub Jason Law, himself on for just a minute, and with his first touch of the game. Then 3 minutes into stoppage time, another sub Kieran Wallace curled a great ball into the area from the left for Oli Hawkins, pushed up front for the final 5 minutes of the game, to send a terrific header back past the keeper into the left corner of the net. There was still time for Crewe to nearly equalise when Elliott Hewitt superbly scissor-kicked off his line. No doubt that the Stags deserved the victory, despite having to rely on the late late show, having shown more quality that Crewe throughout the game.

The Stags inch up to 6th in the table, 3 points behind 3rd place. The next game is on Friday night at home to Hartlepool. If you’re not able to get to the One Call Stadium, you can watch it with us on iFollow Stags by buying a match pass.

Late goals from Will Swan and Oliver Hawkins saw Mansfield Town come from behind to snatch a dramatic win at Crewe Alexandra.

Trailing to a Courtney Baker-Richardson strike, Nottingham Forest loanee Swan took a pass from fellow substitute Jason Law and struck into the bottom corner with a fine finish in the 87th minute.

Hawkins then headed in the winner from Kieran Wallace's cross deep into stoppage time.

After being on the backfoot to a dominant Mansfield for much of the game, Baker-Richardson produced a clinical finish in the 70th minute after being set up by Dan Agyei, who had earlier rapped the visitors' post.

The Stags wasted chances in both halves, with Stephen Quinn blasting wide and full-back Stephen McLaughlin pulling a shot past the far post.

Crewe keeper Arthur Okonkwo pushed around Hawkins' powerful header from a George Maris free-kick.

Okonkwo produced another fine save when tipping over from Ollie Clarke after the Mansfield skipper chested down and hit a powerful half-volley in the second half.

Crewe emerged from their shell with Agyei smacking an effort on to the post before setting up Baker-Richardson's goal.

But the Stags were far from finished and their comeback win was their third success in the past four games and lifted Nigel Clough's side up to sixth in the table.

Last-gasp Mansfield Town fight back to take three points at Crewe Alexandra
chad.co.uk, by Sports Reporter, Sat 24 September 2022

Battling Mansfield produced a remarkable late turnaround to beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1.

Courtney Baker-Richardson had seemingly inflicted the latest chapter in the Stags’ woeful story on the road.

But substitute Will Swan levelled in the 87th minute before Oli Hawkins’ dramatic stoppage-time winner made it four league outings without defeat.

Nigel Clough, expectedly, reverted back to type after making wholesale changes for Tuesday night’s EFL Trophy clash at Grimsby.

From the side which beat Gillingham last weekend, Stephen Quinn replaced Anthony Hartigan - who was forced off through injury at Blundell Park in midweek.

The Stags started brightly and came closest to an opener in the early exchanges as Oli Hawkins forced Arthur Okonkwo into a good save after he latched onto George Maris’ free kick.

German striker Bassala Sambou nodded over the bar with the hosts’ first real chance of the contest.

Stephen McLaughlin tried to send the Stags into the break ahead as his free kick flew over the bar.

And moments later the Irishman fired wide of the mark as Clough’s charges ended the half the stronger.

The Stags were unfortunate not to be ahead just after the restart as Stephen Quinn’s teasing cut back was agonisingly just ahead of on-rushing skipper Ollie Clarke.

Clarke saw another chance go begging as he headed McLaughlin’s pin-point cross over the bar in the 50th minute as Town continued to threaten.

The Mansfield captain was frustrated by the Railwaymen’s stopper as Okonkwo produced a fine save to keep out his well-struck effort after knocking the ball down for himself just after the hour.

Those missed opportunities nearly came back to haunt the visitors as Dan Agyei rattled the post after being superbly slipped in.

But Baker-Richardson made no mistake as he bagged his sixth goal in eight appearance with a cool finish after Agyei found the in-form striker.

Clough quickly made changes in a desperate bid to get something out of the game with forwards Will Swan and Jordan Bowery ushered into the action.

The former almost made an immediate impact, but his shot was well held by Okonkwo with 15 minutes to go.

But he found the back of the net with three minutes to go to steal a share of the spoils as Jason Law’s first contribution after coming on was to provide a superb ball for for Swan to finish.

And there was more drama left in the tale as Hawkins emphatically headed home in the third minute of stoppage time.

Baker-Richardson takes tally to seven for season
Second home league defeat for Morris’s men
The Railwaymen down to 11th in League Two

Crewe Alexandra suffered injury-time heartbreak as Mansfield Town took all three points at Mornflake Stadium.

The Railwaymen were closing in on back-to-back home wins after Courtney Baker-Richardson broke the deadlock with his seventh of the season on 70 minutes.

But Stags sub Will Swan levelled matters in the 87th minute, and Oliver Hawkins grabbed the winner on 93 minutes.

Boss Alex Morris will be frustrated at his side allowing precious points to slip from their grasp.

However, he will now focus on preparing his players for next weekend’s trip to Carlisle United.

Morris made just one change to his side, with Khanya Leshabela making his first league start for the club in place of Eli King, who is away with Wales Under-21s.

Neither keeper was really troubled in a goalless first half. Crewe’s Arthur Okonkwo made a routine stop from a Hawkins header, and Conor Thomas made a super block just as the space opened up for Stephen Quinn, as the visitors looked slightly more likely going forward.

At the other end, headers over the bar from Bassala Sambou and Baker-Richardson were the most threatening Crewe looked in a quiet attacking display.

The second half initially followed a similar pattern. Ollie Clarke headed over a Stephen McLaughlin cross on 50 minutes, and the same player had a sweet half-volley well saved by Okonkwo just after the hour.

But Crewe burst into life on 69 minutes when Dan Agyei raced onto a Tariq Uwakwe pass and rattled a post with the keeper beaten.

And soon afterwards, the hosts conjured the best move of the game when Rod McDonald, Sambou and Agyei combined to tee up Baker-Richardson for a clinical finish from an angle.

The Alex, who had looked solid all afternoon, were pegged back when Swan took a nice touch to open up the space and he buried a shot in the bottom corner.

And Mansfield found a winner when Hawkins steered a header home after meeting a deep cross from the left.

Crewe went desperately close to snatching an equaliser at the death, as sub Rio Adebisi saw a shot blocked and penalty appeals for handball went unheeded by the referee.

But they ran out of time as they tried to recover.
